Connecticut Sun vs. Indiana Fever WNBA preview and prediction

The Indiana Fever, who have won four of five, look to stay hot going into the All-Star break when they host the Connecticut Sun Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET. 

Indiana, the league’s highest-scoring team at 94.4 points per game, obliterated the reeling New York Liberty on Saturday, 108-88. The Fever’s trio of All-Stars led the way. Kelsey Mitchell had a game-high 33 points, Caitlin Clark added 17 points and seven assists, and Aliyah Boston chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds.

The Sun started the season 2-15, but have gone 5-4 in recent weeks. They did have a brief two-game win streak halted at Phoenix on Sunday, 72-63. Brittney Griner had 19 points and five rebounds, and Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 12 points and 12 rebounds, but Connecticut could not overcome a season-high 21 turnovers.

Indiana won the only previous meeting between the teams this season, last month, 85-75.

Connecticut Sun vs. Indiana Fever WNBA Odds and Betting Trends

Indiana is a heavy -10.5 favourite on the WNBA odds with a -460 moneyline. Meanwhile, Connecticut is at +390. 

The Fever have won 10 of 13 at home, but are just 1-5-1 against the spread in their last seven games against Connecticut, which is 7-2 ATS in its last nine games.

The over/under for this contest is 178.5. The Sun have played to the Under in six of nine, and Indiana has played to the Over in four of their last five home games.  

Connecticut Sun

The Sun have shown signs of life, but they will be shorthanded again on Wednesday. Aaliyah Edwards, who is averaging 9.4 points and 3.8 rebounds, left Monday’s loss to Phoenix in the first quarter with a knee injury. She is out Wednesday.

So is Saniya Rivers. The second-year guard is missing her second straight game with a lower leg injury. Griner is questionable after leading the Sun in scoring on Monday. 

Aneesah Morrow, who is averaging 10.5 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds, has missed six straight games. She is undergoing reconditioning.

If Griner cannot play, that leaves Nelson-Ododa to shoulder the load, along with Diamond Miller, who had six points and seven rebounds on Sunday. 

Leila Lacan is averaging 12.9 points per game, second on the team behind Griner. She had 26 in a 96-83 win over the Mercury on Friday, but she went just 2-for-9 from the field and finished with seven points and a career-high nine turnovers on Sunday.

Indiana Fever

It’s hard to beat Clark for press or Boston for accolades, but Mitchell continues to power along. She has scored 20 or more points in 10 straight games and has recorded back-to-back performances of 30 or more points for the first time in her career. Her 23.3 points per game is good for second in the WNBA.

Sophie Cunningham and Tyasha Harris each had 11 points off the bench for Indiana against the Liberty. They are part of a dependable group of reserves that have complemented the All-Star trio all season.

The Fever covered as 8.5-point favourites last month against Connecticut. Look for them to do so again Wednesday, winning 95-80.
