Injury Prevents Bianca Andreescu from Playing U.S. Open
The U.S. Tennis Association made the official announcement regarding Andreescu’s absence on Saturday. Details were sparse, except for the fact that she requires more time to nurse an injury.
As pointed out by the Associated Press, the Canadian also withdrew from a recent event in Cincinnati because of a small stress fracture in her back. She divulged that information herself on social media. It stands to reason that the lingering effects prevent her from partaking in action at Flushing Meadows.
Andreescu won the U.S. Open in 2019, an accomplishment that announced her to the tennis world at large and even the most casual fans of the sport in Canada. Since then things have been difficult, as suggested by her current WTA ranking of 51.
Canada still has some significant names at the event, both on the women’s and men’s sides. Number 15 ranked Felix Auger-Aliassime, Leyla Annie Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, and Milos Raonic will all be present.
Play begins on Monday, August 28. The women’s singles final is scheduled for Saturday, September 9, whereas the men’s singles conclude on Sunday, September 10.
