Mayweather vs. McGregor: Boxing Bettors Like Conor as Underdog

It started as a joke. A proposed “dream fight” between one of the most accomplished boxers to ever set foot in the ring, and a controversial MMA star with a penchant for dramatic discourse. It seemed like one of the most absurd ideas ever floated. But over the course of a year, that absurd idea gathered steam and hype and huge public interest until what many said was impossible, became a reality.

So here we are. Conor McGregor will fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on August 26 in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. They will compete at 154 lbs with 10 oz gloves. They are expected to earn at least $100 million dollars each. It’s going to be mayhem. Here’s where you can bet on it.

We first posted odds for this bout in December 2016 and had listed Floyd Mayweather as a big -3425 favourite against the +900 underdog McGregor. Those numbers were just too tempting for many bettors, and many of them responded by laying down early bets on McGregor, shifting those odds more in his favor. In a short period of time, our odds still favored Mayweather, but at -1350 while McGregor was listed at +635.

Now that this boxing match is official, the odds have begun to settle and become somewhat less lopsided. 40-year old Mayweather, who boasts a perfect 49-0 pro boxing record and is coming out of retirement (again), is still the favorite at -656. McGregor, the first fighter to hold two UFC championships simultaneously but who has never boxed professionally, is the +376 underdog.

Since opening McGregor vs. Mayweather odds, almost 90 percent of Sports Interaction’s wagers have come in on McGregor to win, so it’s no surprise to see his odds to continue to drop from that lofty opening number.

Sports Interaction is now also offering odds on who would win in which round, and on win method. Early bettors are decidedly pro-McGregor, picking him to win by KO/TKO/DQ as the most popular bet at +611, followed by McGregor winning by Decision, currently priced at +2300.
