Well do YOU believe? Do you?

The United States have become a hotbed for soccer over the past few weeks, united in their support of the Team USA team that’s looking to advance to the Group of 16 today. Of course, you’ve likely heard by now that USA and Germany will both go through with a draw, making this match a real crapshoot.

Sure, you can push for a goal early and a chance to win the group, but what happens if you get caught and go a goal down? Then you’re really in trouble. It’s this type of thought process that has many figuring this game will be a glorified passing practice, with neither team taking any chances.

I’m not so sure about that.

Right now Sports Interaction has Team USA listed as a +625 underdog to the favored Germany (-156), with the draw at +229.

Pregame:

Well, if nothing else, I do believe that something, anything really, will happen in this game.

Team USA wants to prove it has moved up a level and this match against Germany is a perfect opportunity to do just that. Do I think the Americans will risk much in trying to prove their point? Absolutely not.

What we’ll likely see is a careful game played by both sides with a few chances coming here and there. If one team strikes in the first half, that all changes and it’s a barnburner until the final whistle.

This insane flood that’s happening in Brazil won’t help the flow of the game either and I do think the Germans are better suited to play this type of wait-and-see game. Team USA might get caught up in the moment and go for it early, which I think would be a mistake.

Germany’s the better team but Team USA has more to lose. I’m not touching this one.

Also not touching will there be a goal in the first minute, but the +8000 payout is tasty.

First half:

Germany’s depth is just off the charts. The Germans have to be the team best-suited for injuries/cards moving forward into the knockout round. Podolski on today and should be a factor. He had a good rip from the corner of the box but it went well wide.

USA staying patient so far, content to let Germany hold possession.

A little more than 10 minutes in and Germany clearly making a statement that they aren’t going to make this easy for USA.

11′ Yellow card to Hoewedes.

Good counterattacking effort their from Dempsey. As this match moves on, you get the feeling that’s the only way Team USA is getting a strong scoring opportunity.

Seems like a matter of time before Muller scores. He was -125 to hit the back of the net today.

Word comes in that Germany completed 108 passes in the first 10 minutes. USA had 12.

A couple of corners for USA there, but both were dealt with easily.

Better push from USA now as we’ve passed 20 minutes. Zusi fires just high on a dangerous effort.

Referee getting ripped for accidentally taking down Jones on a USA chance. Looks like the Germans had that play covered well anyway.

Bradley catching more flack for his work in the middle of the pitch. Sure, he hasn’t been the best player on the field each game, but he’s holding his own against some stiff competition. Not like he has much help in the middle either.

Yellow card for a strong foul from Omar Gonzalez to break up a dangerous looking build up from Germany. Team USA will take that foul all day long.

That’s it for the first half.

USA 0, Germany 0.

First half thoughts:

A little surprising to see Germany pour it on USA for the first 10 minutes instead of the other way around, but either way, the first half has worked out fine for both sides. USA will hope for more possession in the second half, but as long as the Americans keep everyone behind the ball they should be fine. One worry is a number of sloppy fouls. Germany can make you pay quickly on set pieces.

0-0 at the break. Halftime line: USA is +583, Germany -106, draw dips all the way to +140.

Some halftime clicks for you here:

Origins of Team USA’s I Believe that We Will Win chant

This 4-year-old gives the best Herb Brooks Miracle speech ever.

This is what has to happen for Team USA to go through into the knockout stage.

Second half:

If I had to pick someone to break this scoreless draw, it’s Klose. He’s a goal away from breaking the all-time World Cup scoring record.

Omar Gonzalez with another strong challenge. If not for him, Team USA could be down a goal or two.

Klose getting, well, closer. He was +121 to score today.

GOAL. Thomas Muller! #Ger leads #USA 1-0 in 54th minute!

Muller got onto a rebound and hammered it past Howard from just outside the box. That’s Muller’s fourth goal of the tournament and pushes USA to the brink.

Ghana tied 1-1 with Portugal in the other game, so it’s getting tight for USA. Another goal from Ghana makes it really interesting.

If Ghana wins 2-1 and USA loses 1-0, the Americans are going home.

USA! USA! USA! Chants are just ringing through this stadium but the Americans look like they’re holding on for dear life. Subs are needed. And quickly.

Jürgen Klinsmann does realize he has subs in the bank right?

Two Americans collide hard and are lying on the pitch. That’s probably a good sign to make a sub, Jurgs.

UPDATE: Ronaldo scores for Portugal, giving USA life.

87′ – USA still holding on. This is a completely underwhelming performance from Team USA but it looks as though they’ll have Cristiano Ronaldo to think for a little bit of breathing room.

Team USA – ZERO shots on target vs. Germany.

Full time: Germany 1, USA 0.

Well, it wasn’t a 0-0 draw, but it wasn’t much better than that. From the Americans’ perspective, they get what they need to go through, so that’s something. They will need a lot more than that to advance any further than the round of 16. Not great from Germany either after a good start. In the end, a win is a win though.
