World Cup 2014 Germany vs. Portugal Score, Live Updates, Result
Can Cristiano Ronaldo lead his Portugal side past the favored Germans in Group G play? Frank Doyle is back with another World Cup 2014 live blog.
It’s all about Cristiano Ronaldo, isn’t it? If he’s fit, he can take over this match by himself, carrying the rest of Portugal along behind. But his health remains one of the main storylines for this game. We always knew he was going to suit up despite lingering knee problems. How much of an impact he can have in this match is another matter entirely.
He’s at +340 to score today, although it’s Germany favored to win the match at -122. Portugal sits at +297 with the draw at +301.

Full disclosure: I have Germany winning this entire tournament, so keep that in mind. The Germans are just so deep and come into the World Cup with so much experience. This club has weapons all over the pitch and can beat you a lot of different ways.
Quite unlike, 0h I don’t know, Portugal. If Ronaldo isn’t the best player on the pitch, I don’t see how Portugal has a hope here. Plus, you know Germany isn’t giving him any space.
First half:
Here we go.
Such a nice build-up from Germany to open the match in the second minute results in the first corner. Lahm looks ready to run all day.
Amazing that we’re averaging better than three goals per game in this tournament. I doubt it’ll continue along at that clip but it seems as though most teams in general are pushing forward more than they were four years ago.
Ronaldo sets up Almedia for the first shot of the game. Nice play but the shot wasn’t anything dangerous.
Ronaldo smashes well over the goal from 35 yards out, so he looks like he’s set to put some pressure on the Germans.
Germany and Portugal trading chances in a sloppy start to this one as we head into the ninth minute.
PENALTY COMING FOR GERMANY.
GOAL! Müller converts!
Crucial few minutes here now for Portugal. Germany could easily be up 2-0 right now and just keeps coming at Portugal.
Now 23 minutes in the book as this match begins to settle down a bit. Germany still holding most of the possession and generating consistent pressure.
Nani goes just over the bar with a rocket. That was a few inches from being a tie game.
Eder comes in for Almedia just 28 minutes into the first half.
Corner coming up for Germany.
GOAL!
Mats Hummels heads in the corner to make it 2-0 in 32nd minute.
Portugal, down 2-0, now a huge +1300 underdog to beat Germany. Any takers?
Pepe sent off after altercation with Muller at 37th minute. Looked like a headbutt.
That’s a terribly selfish play by Pepe there. He’s was getting worked up and down the pitch by Muller then goes after him when the German is knocked down. Portugal close to imploding before the half.
Feels like Germany might be set to put a bow on this one already.
ANNNND 3-0. Frank Doyle, prophet.
Muller again after some terrible defending by Portugal. Again.

Well, it’s all over but the Cristiano Ronaldo tears, which are now available for $1 mill per tear.
Muller nearly has the hat trick but his header sails just over the bar. Portugal still having problems gaining possession or doing much with the ball when they get it.
Portugal free kick just outside the box is cleanly headed away by Germany. The Germans are just so much better at the back.
60 ‘ – Ronaldo free kick looked dangerous but crashed off the wall and away.
Coentrao pulls a hamstring and the stretcher comes out to pick him up. Worst day ever for Portugal.
Nani looks like Portugal’s most dangerous player today.
Ronaldo is just begging to get carded chasing the referee around like that. Probably had a decent case for a penalty, but he certainly doesn’t do much to help his reputation.
GOAL GERMANY! 4-0.
Muller again to complete the hat trick.
Now the only thing left to see is whether Portugal comes completely unglued with more cards coming out.
Ronaldo has one good effort on a free kick just before the final whistle but that too is blocked away.
Final score: Germany 4, Portugal 0.
