Team Spain

The La Furia Roja are one of the true soccer powerhouses in the world – although perhaps not quite where they were was about 8-10 years ago. Spain won the 2010 World Cup and this event in both 2008 & ’12 (and 1964). The Spaniards reached the Round of 16 five years ago and lost 2-0 to Italy.

Coach Luis Enrique’s side is ranked No. 6 in the world. It won Group F in qualifying with eight victories and two draws and with a whopping plus-26 goal differential – it won its final two games by a combined score of 12-0. Enrique actually had stepped down as coach in June 2019 for personal reasons but then came back aboard after qualifying. Alvaro Morata, Sergio Ramos and Rodrigo led Spain with four goals each in qualifying. This is Spain’s eighth game at the Estadio La Cartuja; the country just played there on March 31 and beat Kosovo 3-1 in World Cup qualifying.

Team Sweden

Coached by Janne Andersson, Sweden is ranked No. 18 in the world. It also qualified out of Group E, finishing second to Spain with six wins, three draws and a loss with a goal differential of plus-14. Host Spain won the first match vs. Sweden 3-0 way back in June 2019 and then the sides drew 1-1 in October 2019 in Sweden. Sadly, superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss this tournament due to injury. The 39-year-old came out of international retirement in March.

It’s the sixth straight trip to the European Championship for Sweden and seventh overall. The Swedes were big disappointments five years ago when they finished last in Group E. The side hasn’t advanced out of the group stage since reaching the quarterfinals in 2004. Sweden has played in Seville once previously, losing 3-1 to Spain in a February 1968 friendly. The Swedes have beaten Spain just three times overall and not since 2006 in the European Championship.
