Team Italy

Italy has qualified for the knockout round and controls its destiny to win Group A (win or draw) with six points and a plus-6 goal differential following a 3-0 victory over Switzerland on Wednesday in Rome – Italy also won its first group match 3-0 over Turkey. Entering Euro 2020, the Italians had never scored three goals in a European Championship match. Manuel Locatelli (26th and 52nd minute) and star Ciro Immobile (89th) had the goals against Switzerland. Immobile has scored in each of his last three international appearances and is +139 for an anytime goal in this match.

However, the news was not all good as 36-year-old captain Giorgio Chiellini left the pitch injured, holding his thigh. His status remains TBA as of this writing, but with Italy into the Round of 16, he likely sits regardless. Against the Swiss, Chiellini had become the Italian with the most European Championship appearances with 14. He had a goal in the 20th minute overturned by VAR because of a handball. The Italians now have a 29-match unbeaten streak (some draws) and haven’t allowed a goal during a 10-game winning streak.

Team Wales

We projected Wales to tie Turkey 1-1 in Matchday 2 action on Wednesday from Baku, but the Welsh prevailed 2-0 to get to four points in Group A action with a goal differential of plus-2. Wales superstar Gareth Bale failed to score again vs. Turkey but did set up the goals by Aaron Ramsey in the 42nd minute and Connor Roberts the 95th minute (injury time). Bale had a penalty try earlier in the 61st minute and missed it. He created five clear-cut chances overall, the first player in recorded Euro history (since 1980) to create that many in a match.

Chip Mepham and Ben Davies drew yellow cards in the victory. Wales has now kept a clean sheet in 12 of its past 17 international matches. Wales will finish in the Top 2 of Group A and advance with a draw or if Switzerland fails to beat Turkey also Sunday. Most likely, Wales finishes runner-up and would take on the team that finishes second in Group B (likely either Russia or Finland) in the knockout round.
