English Premier League Odds, Prediction: Manchester City vs. Liverpool

Second-place against first and the former champions against the champions. That’s the backdrop of Thursday’s Manchester City-Liverpool showdown on Thursday but it is slightly dulled. Liverpool has already won the league, so there’s not a ton on the line. Even so, they will go into this game trying to break records, many of which are currently held by City who will attempt to protect them.

Comfortably in second place, Manchester City have very little to play for. Liverpool have already confirmed their winning of the Premier League title and an out of form Leicester City side are closest behind them, eight points adrift in third place. Despite this, the upholding of their records will probably be important to them. City’s recent form has been rather more mixed than Pep Guardiola would hope for – especially when considering their ambitions and general squad quality. They have lost two of their last four games, including a defeat at Stamford Bridge which confirmed Liverpool’s first league title of the Premier League era. Despite this, the Sky Blues will be keen to get out of this slump and a victory against the best team in England is one of the best ways to do so.

Liverpool will go into this game with an enormous boost as newly confirmed champions of England. Their season has been absolutely magnificent and anyone can appreciate that they deserve their title. The Reds have put on some immense performances and while some victories have come down to luck, one certainly needs some luck to finish first in such a competitive league. Their players, many of whom have performed in an exemplary manner this season, will have a large mental boost in their next fixture. It is their first game as Champions and against their closest rivals, it would be especially sweet to stick it to them. While they have dropped points twice in their past five Premier League games, one of which was a 3-0 shock-loss to Watford, these both seem like blips in the incredible form of the season as a whole. They will also be attempting to earn records towards the end of the campaign. Manchester City have won the most games in a Premier League season at 32 while also earning the most points with 98. Although the Manchester side will be desperate to keep these intact, Liverpool will be keen to overturn them and have theirs go down as one of, if not the, best season in Premier League history.

Ultimately, it seems that Liverpool’s added motivation and will to win may be exactly what they need to get over the line in this match. The Reds have the opportunity to break records which would improve the overall image of their season and would prove how magnificent they have been, providing them, in my opinion, with the edge to win this match.
