Youngster Phil Foden has scored three goals in his last two appearances for Manchester City ahead of Thursday's date with Chelsea.
Chelsea will take on Manchester City in a clash of the titans this Thursday. The London side will hope to combat City’s good form with what little home advantage can be found in closed doors matches these days. Meanwhile, the Sky Blues will look to continue their form, having scored eight goals and conceded none in their two games since the beginning of Project Restart. The EPL odds board has Man City as a -133 favourite with Chelsea the +300 underdog.
Chelsea Odds and News
Now that the Premier League has restarted, Chelsea’s bid for Champions League qualification is back underway. While it remains unclear whether fifth place will get to qualify (City has been banned for two years), fourth place will still be eligible. That puts extra importance on winning. Man United and Wolves aren’t far back (with 46 points), so Chelsea has to do their part and boost their 51 points in this one.
In their first match back, the Blues overcame a slight obstacle to beat relegation battlers Aston Villa. Despite dominating for almost the entirety of the first half, the Blues fell behind to a goal from the Birmingham side late in the first half. Despite this scare, they managed to go on and win the game with two quick goals with Olivier Giroud scoring the winner.
The concern here is that Chelsea’s recent form against Manchester City is poor. They have beaten them just once since the beginning of the 2017-18 season but fans will hope that things may change under a new manager this time. They also have the added boost of a newly confirmed signing in Timo Werner, which may motivate the players – especially attackers – to play better with added competition on the way.
Manchester City Odds and News
The Manchester side are in absolutely fantastic form. Their first game back since the hiatus witnessed them thrash Arsenal 3-0 at home. They then went on to beat Burnley by an even larger margin on Monday, 5-0, again at the Etihad Stadium. Although there will be no fans in the stadium, City may find that there was a small advantage to playing at home during Project Restart.
With the team in good form, they also have some players who have been playing magnificently of late. Youngster Phil Foden has scored three goals in his last two appearances, netting against Arsenal and then popping up with a goal against Burnley.
Overall, it seems that Manchester City may have the upper hand going into this match. Despite the added motivation for Chelsea of a new arrival and lots of competition for fourth spot, the Citizens’ form is undeniable. Along with having some incredible squad depth to combat the fatigue induced by so many games in such a short space of time, it seems that they will edge out Chelsea.
