Canada vs. Sweden: Tokyo Olympics Women’s Soccer Final Odds
The United States Women’s National team looked utterly confounded on Monday morning, as they watched the Canadian players celebrate their first win against them in two decades. The Americans will now play Australia for the bronze medal.
Canada vs. Sweden Olympic Gold Medal Odds
The Canadians are finally getting a chance to play for silver or gold in these Tokyo games, after winning back-to-back bronze medals in the previous two. They’ll be facing the favoured Swedes for the first time in this tournament, and both teams are hoping to win their first ever Olympic gold medals.
Canadians hoping to tune into this game are in for a late night, the match starts at 10pm ET on Thursday night.
Team Canada
It was a win twenty years in the making, as Team Canada finally defeated the United States women’s national team with a penalty kick in the 75th minute of the match. Jessie Fleming got the glory for Canada, after Deanne Rose drew a penalty from American defender Tierna Davidson. It took a video review, but the result was a Canadian penalty kick, and ultimately a Canadian victory.
The American side has won the gold medal four times, and in their history of playing Canada, has only lost four times out of 62 meetings. Fleming spoke to the press after the match and had this to say about her team’s struggle against the U.S. team.
“It has been a long time coming to beat those guys. We want to come away with gold now but it is really special for us to put our flag on the map.”
Captain Christine Sinclair also spoke to the media after the match, saying: “Our goal coming here was to change the colour. Two back-to-back bronzes. We were kind of sick of that. And this team, wow. What a performance. What a fight. One more to go.”
Team Sweden
Sweden defeated Australia 1-0 with a 46th-minute goal from Fridolina Rolfo, setting them up to play for the gold medal, and are favourites to beat the Canadians.
Sweden has been fantastic throughout this tournament, unbeaten through the group, quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. Since women’s soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996, Sweden has medaled just once, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where they earned the silver medal after losing to Germany in the final.
The bronze medal game between Australia and the United States will be held in Kashima on Thursday with the big finale to this women’s tournament – the gold medal match – being held at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on Friday.
