The CONCACAF Women’s Championship runs from July 4-18 this year, and Canada will play their second match against Panama. The game, which is for round 2 of Group B, takes place this Friday at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, in which the two countries will play each other for just the second time in a CWC match.

This tournament is serving as the qualifying tournament for the 2023 FIFA World Cup as well as giving a direct berth into the 2024 Paris Olympics.  Canada is ranked No. 6 in the world and Panama is ranked No. 57. Next up for the Canadians is a game against No. 37 Costa Rica on July 7.

It’s been almost four years since these two clubs have played one another; the last time was at a CWC semifinal in 2018. In that game, Canada saw goals from Christine Sinclair, Jessie Fleming and Janine Beckie – all of whom scored in Canada’s opening game this past Tuesday.

Team Canada

Canada opened their tournament with a resounding bang, blanking Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 for a statement-making debut game. Even though that final score is lopsided, it’s important to note that Trinidad and Tobago kept things much closer for the majority of the match, with Canada stepping on the gas in the tail end, scoring four goals in the final 11 minutes.

Team captain and women’s soccer legend Christine Sinclair opened up the scoring and padded out her personal record to 11 goals in CWC tournaments. Beckie, Fleming and Jordyn Huitema each netted a goal, and Julia Grosso scored twice – her very first international tournament goals.

The Canadians are hoping to secure first place in Group B with another win in Friday’s matchup.

Team Panama

Panama comes into this game against the Olympic Champions as major underdogs after dropping their first game against Costa Rica 3-0.

Panama is one of eight teams that have been divided into two groups for this tournament, where the third-place finishers will go on to a 10-team intercontinental playoff in New Zealand early next year.
