Brazil Will Dominate Group G
While lacking the hype of previous years, this Brazil team has the talent to go all the way in South Africa.
How they got here
The five time World Cup champions topped the South American qualifiers to comfortably qualify for South Africa. After opening with a draw at Colombia, Brazil brought out the big guns with a 5-0 win at home to Ecuador. A road draw at Peru was followed by a home win over Uruguay before hitting a bump in the road by going down 2-0 at Paraguay.
Brazil then record four draws and two wins in its next six games, far from the dominance we’ve come to expect but they right the ship soon enough. Five straight wins over Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile put Brazil back in charge and into the World Cup.
Who to watch
Brazil’s roster is headlined by three members of the Inter team which won the Champions League and Serie A in Italy. Goalkeeper Julio Cesar and defenders Lucio, and Maicon were at the heart of that all conquering outfit and they will look to add to their medal haul in South Africa. Real Madrid’s Kaka is the best known midfield talent but watch out for the presence of enterprising midfielder Ramires of Benfica and the physically imposing Roma star Julio Baptista.
Up front Robinho, who is back playing in Brazil with Santos after stints at Real Madrid and Manchester City, is the best known player but those with a World Cup betting interest would be better looking at Luis Fabiano of Sevilla. Having scored 25 times in 36 internationals, Luis Fabiano is a dangerous striker and Brazil’s game plan is built to give him opportunities to score.
How they will perform
Brazil never goes into the World Cup under the radar but this team almost managed it. Playing a fluid and effective system that keeps opponents guessing, this Brazil team will be favored in almost every conceivable match up. Looking at the group rivals, while some are calling this the group of death the reality is Portugal and Ivory Coast are over-rated.
In terms of raw talent no team in the group can compete with Brazil, throw in tactical superiority and stability in its gameplan and this is a team built to walk into the knockout rounds. This will be the group of greatness, for one team. This is not the Brazil of 1970, 1982, or even 2002. This is a whole other animal and the rest of the world will sit up and take notice.
