Group D Team Previews
Argentina
Odds: +800 To Win World Cup
Lionel Messi needs support from Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero if this team is to make a serious run. They have a decent midfield but there are a lot of questions in the defense, however. The loss of injured goalkeeper Sergio Romero doesn’t help matters. Check out Sports Interaction’s complete Argentina World Cup betting preview here.
Croatia
Odds: +3200 To Win World Cup
Led by Luke Modric, Croatia might have the best midfield in the tournament. Mario Mandzukic is also underrated up front. But like Argentina, they have a questionable defense that is likely to be a factor later in the tournament. The complete betting preview for Croatia is here.
Iceland
Odds: +19100 To Win World Cup
Iceland showed they could compete when they emerged as the Cinderella of the European Championships two years ago but they have had a few injuries in the run-up to the World Cup. That will really hurt their chances. They’ll be aiming to stay out of the basement. Check out our full preview for Iceland’s World Cup odds here.
Nigeria
Odds: +20700 To Win World Cup
Nigeria are going to be fun to watch going forward. They have a lot of youth in their attacking players, like Alex Iwobi. They’re poor at the back, though, and that hurts them in this group. Click here for an in-depth preview at Team Nigeria.
Group D Players to Watch
Lionel Messi, Argentina (+702 To Win Golden Ball): No players is under more pressure to win the World Cup than Messi. He came up just short in 2014 against Germany, but he also carried Argentina to the final. Again, he needs help, especially from Di Maria. But some feel Messi needs a World Cup to be an all-time great. Does Messi feel that way? Sometimes his international efforts feel like they lack that desire.
Luka Modric, Croatia (+6100 To Win Golden Ball), Egypt: Modric was the best player on the pitch in Real Madrid’s Champions League final win. He can play an advanced position or he can set tempo as a deep-lying midfielder. Depending on how he is played, Modric can control a game.
Gylfi Sigurdsson, Iceland (+19400 To Win Golden Ball): Sigurdsson suffered a knee injury leading up to the World Cup. He is Iceland’s best attacking threat and he should be back for the tournament. However, he probably isn’t close to 100%. Iceland need him there.
John Obi Mikel, Nigeria (+25100 To Win Golden Ball): Mikel is the most experienced player on his team. He has to shield the defense, which is a tough task.
Group D Best Bets
Argentina should pull ahead of Croatia, if only because they have Messi. That leaves Croatia in second place. Nigeria will finish ahead of Iceland, who have too many injuries to deal with.
