Vancouver Whitecaps vs. New York City FC MLS Preview and Prediction
Both conferences’ second-place teams will fight for points in a vital MLS matchup this Saturday night when the Vancouver Whitecaps are challenged by NYCFC. Vancouver made it further in the playoffs than their New York counterparts last year, although both ultimately failed to overcome Inter Miami’s wrath, making this game a worthwhile one to watch.
Don’t miss out on last year’s MLS Cup finalists at home against the 2021 Champions, as the ball gets rolling at 7:30 p.m. ET this Saturday at BC Place in Vancouver.
Vancouver Whitecaps vs. New York City FC MLS Odds and Betting Trends
This modern matchup has only seen seven games played in total, and NYCFC has taken charge with three wins to Vancouver’s one. It’s not easy to come out victorious in this clash, as nearly half their meetings ended in draws, including their last two in 2022 and 2023. The Whitecaps haven’t won against New York since 2017, even with two home games played against them since then, but on the flip side, New York’s last victory against the Caps was in 2019. Only one game has gone completely scoreless.
Despite New York’s slight historic leverage, the Whitecaps are -150 home favourites against their +350 opponents, as they take +700 odds to win the MLS Cup this year. With how close both teams’ results are, a draw is priced at +290, with over 2.5 goals most likely at -145.
New York City FC
NYCFC suffered their first loss at the end of March against Inter Miami, although it was a close match that stayed level at 2-2 until the 74′. Their season started with a draw, but followed with three straight wins – 10 goals – and saw the opposition receive red cards in three straight games. Most recently, the side defeated St. Louis SC to bolster their second-place position in the East with the most goals (14), the second-highest GD (seven) and 11 points.
Nicolas Fernandez could be the key to breaking through Vancouver’s bolstered defence, as he enters this match with five goals to his name and is set to score anytime at +265 for this one. Teammates Hannes Wolf (+360), Axel Ojeda (+475) and Keaton Parks (+750) all boast two goals apiece for the Minstermen, and it’ll take some real firepower to pierce the Whitecaps back line – a unit with only four goals allowed this season.
Vancouver Whitecaps
When it comes to goals allowed, only LAFC (zero allowed) and Nashville SC (three allowed) hold lower counts than Vancouver. Surprisingly though, the side lost both their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 legs to the Seattle Sounders with five goals allowed. They returned to Major League Soccer to suffer their first defeat of the season to third-place San Jose in a 1-0 result, but when you look at their five games played in the MLS, they’ve only had one with fewer than three goals scored – their 1-0 shutout loss to San Jose. They netted six in a clean sheet win against Minnesota on March 15 and most recently edged out Portland 3-2 on April 4.
Brian White makes way as the most probable scorer of the night at +125 with five goals to show for this season. Thomas Müller (+160) and Sebastian Berhalter (+475) both have three goals each, with the lethal forward-midfielder-defender combo accounting for 11 of the team’s 17 goals.
MLS Prediction: Who Will Win Vancouver Whitecaps vs. New York City FC?
This one is certain to be an excitingly close match, but overall, I’m thinking Vancouver’s defensive superiority will allow them to come out victorious.
Out of two away games, NYCFC has only won one by a single goal. New York has also played half their games this season against teams that played down a man due at some point to red card ejections, which could’ve massively influenced their wins early in the season. Vancouver may have lost their last home game of March (by one goal), but they average three goals a game and allow fewer than a goal a game at their own turf.
All things considered, I’d say this sets up for a 2-1 Whitecaps win, which hits the over 2.5 as well.
