Josh Sargent
While exact financial details haven’t been announce, the 26-year-old Sargent will join TFC as a designated player through the 2030-31 MLS season, the team announced on Friday. The contract is pending a physical, work permit and International Transfer Certificate.
Toronto also had to acquire Sargent’s MLS right of first refusal from St. Louis FC for $500,000 in General Allocation Money. That money will be split evenly across 2026 and 2027, with up to $225,000 more in conditional G.A.M. tied to performance incentives.
Sargent has spent the last five seasons in England, making his Premier League debut with Norwich in 2021. In 157 appearances across all competitions, the Missouri native tallied 56 goals and 15 assists.
Sargent is coming off the best season of his career in 2024-25. He was named to the Championship Team of the Season after finishing with 15 goals and five assists in 32 league matches, including a 15-game stretch that saw him score 11 goals.
Sargent also spent two-and-a-half seasons in Germany prior to his move to England. He had 15 goals and nine assists in 83 appearances for SV Werder Bremen.
Sargent has scored five goals in 29 international appearances for the United States. He appeared in all three group stage matches for Team USA at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Toronto FC
TFC will be hoping Sargent can jumpstart an offence that produced just 37 goals last season, tied with Austin FC for the third-worst mark in MLS.
The Reds kicked off this season with a 3-2 road loss against FC Dallas. Next up, they’ll stay on the road for an all-Canadian clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps. You can check out our full match preview and score prediction here.
Toronto FC’s +5000 price to win the MLS Cup is middle-of-the-pack for the Canadian clubs. CF Montreal is a +8000 long shot, while last year’s MLS Cup runners-up, Vancouver, are +900 contenders.
