The United States has won Group D in the World Cup, so it’s possible the Americans let some substitutes see plenty of action Thursday against Turkey to complete group play with a late-night kickoff from Los Angeles.

The U.S. will face a third-place team from Group B, E, F, I or J in the new Round of 32. It is most likely that USMNT will play the winner of Wednesday’s Bosnia and Herzegovina-Qatar match from Seattle – if there is a winner. Turkey has been eliminated from advancing and will finish bottom of Group D.

Turkey was ranked 22nd by FIFA entering the World Cup is now 32nd after a 2-0 loss to Australia in the opener and then a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay last Friday to get eliminated from advancing. Paraguay scored just two minutes in but was down to 10 men for the second half due to a first-half stoppage red card — but Turkey still couldn’t find its first goal of the tournament as opposing keeper Orlando Gill made several key saves to preserve the lead. That projected lineup for the USA above is exactly that as no one is quite sure whether coach Mauricio Pochettino might opt to sit all his key guys or only play them a portion of the match with the group title wrapped up. For example, star striker Folarin Balogun doesn’t want to sit because he wants to stay in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot with his two goals (he’s not winning that).
“I want to play every game, that’s the sort of player I am,” Balogun said to the media. “It’s also important to be smart not to pick up a yellow card and miss the round of 32.”
Fellow star Christian Pulisic returned to full training Monday for the first time since June 11 after dealing with an injured left calf. Pulisic played the first half of the opener but not the second match vs. Australia. Midfielder Cristian Roldan has a muscle strain and is day-to-day. Anyone who is remotely injured likely sits. Ditto anyone perhaps sitting on a yellow card like midfielder Tyler Adams. Another here would mean a suspension for the Round of 32. Ditto Balogun, defender Chris Richards and left back Antonee Robinson.
