2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot odds and prediction for tournament top scorer

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is fast approaching, with the opening match set for June 11. While lifting the trophy remains every footballer’s ultimate goal, the Golden Boot carries its own prestige.

Historically, the award rarely goes to a player on the championship-winning side; Brazil’s Ronaldo was the last to achieve both in the same tournament, back at the 2002 World Cup held in Japan and South Korea.

Nearly a quarter century later, someone will have the chance to match that rare double, so let’s dive into my 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot predictions.

2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot odds

Here are players with the top-10 shortest odds of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot at Sports Interaction:

  • Kylian Mbappe (+600)
  • Harry Kane (+700)
  • Erling Braut Haaland (+1400)
  • Lionel Messi (+1600)
  • Mikel Oyarzabal (+1800)
  • Lamine Yamal (+2000)
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (+2500)
  • Vinicius Junior (+3000)
  • Raphinha (+3000)
  • Lautaro Martinez / Julian Alvarez / Ousmane Dembele (+3500)

Here is a list of the previous Golden Boot winners with the tournament champion in bold:

  • 1930: Guillermo Stábile (Argentina) → Uruguay
  • 1934: Oldřich Nejedlý (Czech Republic) → Italy
  • 1938: Leônidas (Brazil) → Italy
  • 1950: Ademir (Brazil) → Uruguay
  • 1954: Sándor Kocsis (Hungary) → West Germany
  • 1958: Just Fontaine (France) → Brazil
  • 1962: Flórián Albert (Hungary), Valentin Ivanov (Soviet Union), Garrincha (Brazil), Vavá (Brazil), Dražan Jerković (Yugoslavia), and Leonel Sánchez (Chile) → Brazil
  • 1966: Eusébio (Portugal) → England
  • 1970: Gerd Müller (West Germany) → Brazil
  • 1974: Grzegorz Lato (Poland) → West Germany
  • 1978: Mario Kempes (Argentina) → Argentina
  • 1982: Paolo Rossi (Italy) → Italy
  • 1986: Gary Lineker (England) → Argentina
  • 1990: Salvatore Schillaci (Italy) → Germany
  • 1994: Oleg Salenko (Russia) and Hristo Stoichkov (Hungary) → Brazil
  • 1998: Davor Šuker (Croatia) → France
  • 2002: Ronaldo  (Brazil) → Brazil
  • 2006: Miroslav Klose (Germany) → Italy
  • 2010: Thomas Müller (Germany) → Spain
  • 2014: James Rodríguez (Colombia) → Germany
  • 2018: Harry Kane (England) → France
  • 2022: Kylian Mbappé (France) → Argentina

The pattern is clear: backing a player from the eventual champion is usually a losing strategy. Only Mario Kempes, Paolo Rossi, Ronaldo, Garrincha, and Vavá have pulled off the double, making contrarian picks all the more appealing.

2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot best bet: Erling Haaland (+1400)

My first pick for the Golden Boot is for Erling Haaland to score the most goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Manchester City striker is a machine, recording 27 goals in 35 Premier League appearances in 2025-26. He was even more dominant for Norway in World Cup qualifying, where he finished eight clear of his nearest challengers, registering 16 goals across Norway’s eight qualifying matches.

If Norway wants to go far, they’re going to need Haaland to score early and often, and I think he could win the Golden Boot even if the Norwegians don’t advance past the Round of 16. The last 13 winners haven’t scored more than eight goals, and 10 of them have scored six or fewer. Haaland could easily reach that tally in the group stage alone, so I’ll take my chances backing the Manchester City striker at 14-1.

2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot prediction: Julian Alvarez (+3500) and Lautaro Martínez (+3500)

My second pick for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is a pair of strikers from Argentina: Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martínez. At 35-1 odds, both players offer great value to not only lead the South American squad in scoring, but to lead the entire tournament.

Although Lionel Messi remains the main man on this team, Alvarez has been in spectacular form at Atletico Madrid, finishing with 21 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. Meanwhile, Lautaro Martínez has been equally prolific at Inter Milan, winning the Golden Boot in Serie A with 17 goals in just 30 games. Both strikers will be pushing for a starting spot in an Argentine squad that won it all in 2022, and at 35-1, there is far more value backing either of them over Messi at +1600.

2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot long shot pick: Goncalo Ramos (+6500)

At 65-1, Portugal’s Goncalo Ramos is the ultimate dart throw, but it’s one worth taking. The Paris Saint-Germain forward announced himself on the world stage with a stunning hat trick off the bench against Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup, and he has only grown since. With Cristiano Ronaldo now 41 and unlikely to maintain the same workload across six or seven matches, Ramos could inherit the starring role for Portugal. If Portugal advances deep into the tournament and Ramos gets hot, 65-1 is a steal.
