PWHL Unveils New Team Names and Logos

The teams are: the Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Montréal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge, and Toronto Sceptres. These are the first official team identities for the league, which had its debut in January 2024.

Last season, teams were simply referred to by their city (like PWHL Toronto) and were identified by one main colour. Those colours have carried over to the new logos to keep things familiar for fans.

There were many who were skeptical about the league launching without team names, but they explained that the tight timeline between its founding and the start of games made it tough. They promised names would come for Year 2, and here we are. Apparently it took nine months to create these six unique team brands.

“We really put a lot of thought into this process,” said Amy Sheer, senior VP of business operations. “Now, we can’t wait to see how fans bring these logos to life at games and make them part of their experience.”

Here’s the breakdown of the new team names:

Boston Fleet: The name nods to the city’s maritime history, and the logo gives a subtle shout-out to the Hartford Whalers, who were part of the NHL from 1979 to 1997. Hilary Knight said it perfectly captures Boston’s relentless and passionate spirit.

Minnesota Frost: This one’s all about Minnesota’s deep love for ice hockey. PWHL’s VP of Brand & Marketing, Kanan Bhatt-Shah, said they kept coming back to “Frost” during discussions, despite having a long list of names to choose from.

Montréal Victoire: Their logo includes a hidden “M” and the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of Quebec. Sheer said they intentionally kept the name in French, even when the team plays outside Montreal, to best represent the city and Quebec.

New York Sirens: The name refers more to the sounds of NYC than Greek mythology. It’s also a nod to the siren that goes off when a goal is scored. While the colours might remind you of other NYC teams like the Liberty or Gotham, Sheer said that wasn’t intentional, but it’s cool to have that connection with the city’s other women’s teams.

Ottawa Charge: Inspired by the city’s motto “Advance – Ottawa – En Avant,” but captain Brianne Jenner said it also reflects the electric energy the fans brought during the first season.

Toronto Sceptres: Toronto’s known as the Queen City, so the PWHL wanted a name that tied into royalty. The Sceptre is a symbol of power and strength.

The 2024-25 PWHL season will have each team playing 30 games, including some at neutral sites.
