Canada vs. USA Prediction: IIHF Women’s World Championship Final Odds

The United States women’s hockey team will be seeking their sixth straight world title and their ninth in the last ten World Championships. Canada will be attempting to change the course of recent history, as they haven’t won the gold medal at the WWC since 2012.

One reason things are looking up for the Canadian side? Canada earned a 5-1 win against the Americans earlier in this tournament.

Finland will battle Switzerland for the bronze medal, and the Russian Olympic Committee and Japan will play for fifth place, a win that comes with a berth in Pool A for the next Women’s Worlds.

These two teams played one another last Thursday, during the round robin. Canada came out with a big win to break their 8-game losing streak against the U.S.

Jamie Lee Rattray scored two goals and Brianne Jenner had three assists in that game. Netminder Ann-Renée Desbiens made 22 saves.

Team Canada

Once again, the Canadians came into the building to win, and they did so in convincing fashion against Switzerland, who were unable to score even one goal against the powerhouse Canadian team.  The top scorer this tournament has been Mélodie Daoust, and she added two more goals to her total in the semifinal. Renata Fast and Rebecca Johnston got the other two goals, and team captain Marie-Philip Poulin had two assists.  The Canadians were relentless, outshooting the Swiss 20-2 in the first period, and 65-10 over all.

Goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens earned the 10-save shutout for the Canadian, but it should be mentioned that Swiss goalie Andrea Braendli deserves a shout out for this one – even though her team was beaten, she stopped a whopping 61 of 65 shots.

Team USA

The Americans will be trying for their sixth consecutive Women’s World Championship win tonight, and they’ll be doing it against a team they’ve consistently beaten in the last decade. That said, they dropped a big one to the Canadians last week in the preliminary round. Can they ride the momentum from their semifinal win over Finland yesterday?

The U.S. team beat Finland 3-0, with goals coming from Alex Carpenter, Abbey Murphy and Kendall Coyne Schofield, who had an empty netter to seal the deal. In the net for the United States was goalie Nicole Hensley, who stopped 14 shots in her shutout win.
