Denis Shapovalov, Victoria Mboko Advance to Australian Open Second Round

Two Canadians are moving on at the Australian Open, with Denis Shapovalov and Victoria Mboko advancing to the second round on Tuesday.

Here’s what you need to know.

Denis Shapovalov

Shapovalov moves on after defeating wild card Bu Yunchaokete of China. The 26-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ontario is the 21st seed in the tournament and he will face Marin Cilic of Croatia on Tuesday.

Shapovalov went as far as the quarterfinals of the 2022 Australian Open, losing to eventual tournament winner Rafael Nadal. He is the last Canadian standing in the men’s singles bracket this year after seventh-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo of Montreal as well Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ontario each fell in the first round.

Victoria Mboko

Mboko, last year’s WTA Newcomer of the Year, needed just 72 minutes to defeat Australia’s Emerson Jones in the first round. The 19-year-old from Toronto, who is seeded 17th, will now play American Caty McNally in the second round.

Mboko exploded onto the scene in 2025, defeating Naomi Osaka in the final of the Canadian Open in Montreal. She competed in the other three Grand Slam tournaments last year, but this is her first Australian Open.
