Team Canada

Team captain Marie-Philip Poulin wasn’t on the ice on Thursday night, as Team Canada took on their greatest rival. She took a hard shot to the chest during her team’s game against Switzerland earlier in the week, so had to watch from the sidelines as her team completely dominated the Americans in a 5-1 victory.

Both teams came into that matchup unbeaten, with Team USA not allowing a single goal in any of their previous three games. That streak was ended in the very first period against Team Canada.

Jamie Lee Rattray scored twice, and Melodie Daoust, Renata Fast and Sarah Nurse each put one in the net for the Canadians. On the American side, it was Lee Stecklein scoring the single U.S. goal  The quarterfinals get underway this Saturday, with Group B winner Japan facing the U.S. and Germany playing Canada.

Team Germany

The German team got the first goal of the game, but were unable to score again against Japan, who netted two in the second period to earn the win. The game also put the German team in a precarious spot coming into their game against Canada, with multiple injuries taking out some of the team’s best talent. Laura Kluge and Sonja Weidenfelder both left the game against Japan with injuries and did not return to the ice, and Nina Christof was hit in the head, but came back.

For Marie Delarbre, playing against Canada is an exciting challenge regardless of the hits to Germany’s roster.  “It will be very hard to play against Canada because they’re a really good team,” said Delarbre, “but as our coach said, we have nothing to lose, so we’re going into the game as underdgos, but anything can happen. It’s great to play against Canada when the worlds are in Canada. It’s going to be a great experience.”
