Canada vs. Czechia: 2024 IIHF World Championship Odds, Prediction
The Canadians remain one of two undefeated teams left in the tournament following Sunday’s 3-2 win over Switzerland, while Czechia is coming off a 4-1 win over Great Britain on Saturday. The two teams will meet on Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. ET with top spot in Group A on the line.
Canada opened as a -185 favourite to win on the World Championship odds, with the total set at 5.5.
Canada vs. Czechia World Championship Odds
Canada and Czechia are both headed to the quarterfinals, but this game remains important as it will determine the winner of Group A. The Canadians sit two points ahead of Czechia for first in the group, so the Czechs need a regulation win to finish in top spot. The winner of Group A will face the fourth place team in Group B, currently Slovakia, and second in Group A faces third in Group B, currently Germany.
Canada has the second-shortest odds to win the tournament at +325 on the World Championship futures board and they are +125 to advance to the final. Czechia is +600 to win the tournament and +200 to reach the final. To finish top-three in the tournament, Canada is -185 and Czechia is +110.
The semifinals are re-seeded by the best ranked teams remaining, so Canada and Czechia could potentially meet again in the semis or one of the medal games.
Team Canada
Canada’s power play made the difference against Switzerland on Sunday, with all three goals coming on the man advantage. Dylan Cozens scored his fifth and sixth goals of the tournament and Nick Paul scored his first. Andrew Mangiapane, the 2021 tournament MVP, picked up a trio of assists. Cozens, who began the tournament at +2000 to be the top goalscorer, is currently tied for the tournament lead in goals and he has a team-high eight points.
Jordan Binnington made 20 saves against the Swiss and he should remain Canada’s starer going forward. The Canadians will also get Bowen Byram back in the lineup against Czechia. Byram was suspended for one game after taking a slashing penalty against Jesse Puljujarvi in Canada’s 5-3 win over Finland.
Team Czechia
Czechia will have an extra day of rest following Saturday’s win against Great Britain. Lukas Sedlak scored twice, while Jakub Krejcik and Ondrej Kase scored singles. Captain Roman Cervenka, who leads the team with eight points (2G, 6A), assisted on all four Czech goals. Lukas Dostal made 14 saves in net.
Czechia badly wants to win this tournament on home ice and they continue to add reinforcements. After the Carolina Hurricanes were bounced from the playoffs, Martin Necas immediately flew to Prague and joined Czechia. The Czechs will have even more firepower in the lineup on Tuesday as Boston Bruins sniper David Pastrnak is expected to make his tournament debut.
