Sochi Day 4: Canada Hits Gold Again in Slopestyle
Women’s Ski Slopestyle
Dara Howell made Huntsville, Ontario proud by winning Canada’s fourth gold medal of the Sochi Olympics and was joined on the podium by Quebec City’s Kim Lamarre, who won the bronze medal.
“I don’t think it will hit me until later,” the 19-year-old Howell told reporters. “It is truly amazing. There is a number of really good girls out there and I came out on top. This is the best moment in my entire life.”
Canada currently sits second in the Sochi medal standings with nine, one behind Norway.
Snowboarding: Men’s Halfpipe
Shaun White caught a lot of heat when he withdrew from the slopestyle competition last week – Canada’s Sebastien Toutant and Max Parrot were particularly unsparing of him on Twitter. But the halfpipe is to White what the studio was to the Beatles – the place where his talent gets its fullest expression. White has won gold in Vancouver and Turin already, making him a short-price favourite for the trifecta.
If White is to be taken down, it’s Switzerland’s Yuri Podladchikov who’s most likely to do it. Podladchikov’s ace in the hole is the Yolo flip, which he himself describes as “the gnarliest trick in the halfpipe.” But if you’re going for something special, where better than the Olympics with the gold medal on the line?

Ski Jumping: Women’s
Women’s ski-jumping has been trying to get into the Olympics since 1998 in Nagano and the IOC has finally relented. Women can compete for the ski-jump for the first time ever at Sochi, and Japan’s seventeen-year-old sensation, Sara Takanaski, is the warm favorite.
Takanaski’s greatest challenger comes from Austria’s Dani ela Iraschko-Stolz, who looked the best in early practice at the weekend. The Canadian flag will be flown by Atsuko Tanaka and Taylor Henrich, who will do their country proud, but the gold medal will certainly go to either Takanaski or Iraschko-Stolz.
