Sochi 2014 Events Calendar & Results: Hamelin Strikes Gold
Curling
Today is the start of both the men’s and women’s competitions in curling at Ice Cube – great name! – Curling Center. There are ten countries competing in the men’s event, and eight in the women’s, making for five and four matches today for the men and women respectively. The Canadian men face the Swiss and the women take on the Chinese. The favorites for both the women’s and men’s events are the same – first Canada, then Sweden, and then the British. The British and Swedes face each other in the first round matches of both competitions today.
Results:
Jennifer Jones and the Canadian squad jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over China and cruised to an easy 9-2 victory. Brad Jacobs’ rink survived a scare from Germany in a 11-8 win that wasn’t supposed to be nearly that close.

Alpine Skiing: Women’s Super Combined
Canada has a legitimate superstar in the Women’s Super Combined Alpine Skiing Competition – she’s Marie-Michèle Gagnon from Lac-Etchemin, Quebec. The discipline combines slalom and downhill skills making it a true test of ability, and Gagnon’s shown just that in her many top ten finishes this season. The opposition is likely to come from Austria’s Anna Fenninger or Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein, one of the smallest countries in the world.
Results:
Marie-Michèle Gagnon fell in this event and was taken from the hill by ambulance, but expects to be OK to compete in the rest of her events despite a dislocated left shoulder and a bruised left thigh.
Short Track Speed Skating
Canada and South Korea are the nations most likely to rule the rink when the Short Track Speed Skating starts today at the Adler Arena. In the men’s competition, Canada’s Charles Hamelin is the man to beat. He won the 500m gold in Vancouver and he’s been good over the longer distances all this season.
Results:
Charles Hamelin used a late push to with the 1,500 metres, Canada’s second gold medal of the Sochi Olympics. Hamelin has a chance to become Canada’s most successful Olympian. He has four career medals with three more events to go at Sochi.
