Alpine Skiing: Men’s Downhill
The Men’s Downhill Skiing begins today, as the athletes hurtle down a two mile course at a speed that can hit 75 miles an hour on the slopes at Rosa Khutor. Alpine skiing is a sport traditionally dominated by Austrians and this year Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal is the favorite. Where does that leave Canada? Team Canada hasn’t won an Alpine Skiing medal in twenty years and this year the country’s hopes rest with Erik Guay, who came fifth in the Alpine Downhill four years ago at Vancouver.

Snowboard: Women’s Slopestyle
After yesterday’s drama in the Men’s Slopestyle, it’s now the women’s turn to do their triple corks on the high hills of Rhosa Khutor. The woman they’re all talking about is Australia’s Torah Bright, who plans to compete in all three snowboard disciplines, and make history doing so.
For Canada, Spenser O’Brien came third in her qualifying heat and got directly through to the final, while Jenna Blasman has to get through a semi-final first. Blasman’s doing very well though – she broke her wrist before Christmas and had to fight hard to make it to Sochi in the first place.

Luge
Canada has never won a medal in the Luge, but it remains one of the most iconic and recognizable of the winter sports. Contestants shoot down an icy corridor on a small sled at speeds of up to 90 miles an hour, and the winners are decided by split seconds.
