Team Canada Day 5
Here’s a look at Canada’s top medal contenders on Day 5 of the Paris Games (all times Eastern).
Caeli McKay and Kate Miller, Women’s diving 10m synchronized final (5 a.m.)
McKay and then-teammate Meaghan Benfeito missed the podium by a half point in Tokyo while McKay fought through an injured ankle. McKay won bronze in the individual 10m event at the 2023 world championships, but she and current teammate Miller have finished outside the top five in the synchro at the last two world championships.
Ilya Kharun, Men’s swimming 200m butterfly final (2:37 p.m.)
The 19-year-old son of Cirque du Soleil performers finished fourth at last year’s world championships, falling short of the podium by just 0.16 of a second. Kharun had the third-fastest time in Tuesday’s semifinals, trailing only the defending Olympic champion and world record holder (Hungary’s Kristof Milak) and the 2023 world champion (France’s Leon Marchand).
Félix Dolci and René Cournoyer, Men’s gymnastics all-around final (11:30 a.m.)
Dolci won gold in both the 2023 Pan American Games all-around and floor exercise. Cournoyer, who represented Canada at the Tokyo Olympics, finished 12th in the all-around at last year’s world championships.
