Team Canada
Late Monday night (Tuesday morning in Beijing) Canada and the United States finally faced one another in the most anticipated game of the Olympic Women’s Hockey tournament so far. As expected, the game was much closer than either team had faced in any of their other prelim games. Team captain Marie-Philip Poulin got a goal in dramatic fashion, scoring on a short-handed penalty shot; Brianne Jenner scored twice and goalie Ann-Renée Desbiens put on a clinic, stopping 51 shots in the 4-2 win over their longtime rivals.
Canada came out of the that preliminary round undefeated at 4-0, outscoring their four opponents by an incredibly lopsided 33-5.
Star forward Mélodie Daoust, who, coming into these games was the team’s top scorer at at the 2021 Worlds, was absent from the ice once again. Daoust was injured in the team’s opening game against Switzerland but they are insisting that she could be back before the gold medal game.

Since then they’ve missed earning a spot on the podium at both events. They come into this quarterfinal game after beating China and Denmark in the preliminary round.
“We have had good turn-around here and I am proud of our team for what we have accomplished, and I don’t think many people thought we were going to be here but we are,” said captain Michelle Lowenhielm. “It’s not pretty but we did great.”
