Toronto Maple Leafs Go Old School, Sign Max Domi
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Tie Domi is one of the more beloved members of past Maple Leafs teams, and now his son Max Domi is going to play for them in 2023-2024. He and the club agreed to a one-year worth $3 million, although sources say final details need to be ironed out.
Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi
Lost in all the kerfuffle of Max Domi coming to Toronto is that team GM Brad Treliving made another move on Sunday. Tyler Bertuzzi, who spent last season with the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, is also joining the Leafs on a one-year contract. His is worth $5.5 million.
Social media was awash with pictures of an infant Max with father Tie from back in the day when the elder Domi adorned the Maple Leafs sweater. Since joining the NHL in 2013 as a draftee of the Coyotes, he’s bounced around the league regularly. He’s been somewhat unfortunate to have been a member of overage-to-poor clubs in that time span.
His best campaign was in 2018-2019 with the Montreal Canadiens when he tallied 72 points in 82 games. The Canadiens themselves finished with a respectable 96 points, but it was one of those seasons when just having a winning record was insufficient to earn a playoff spot. Since then he’s played for the Blue jackets (first stint), the Hurricanes, the Blue Jackets (second stint), the Blackhawks and the Dallas Stars.
Coming to Dallas for the latter part of 2022-2023 provided him with a taste of what success is like. The Stars earned a place in the Western Conference Finals and pushed the Vegas Golden Knights to six games before finally getting eliminated. Domi himself had three goals and 10 assists throughout the playoffs. Now he gets to play for another squad with Stanley Cup aspirations.
As for Bertuzzi, he also changes clubs from one playoff contender to another. After starting his career with the Red Wings, he was dealt to the historically great Boston Bruins at the trade deadline. His playoff numbers were strong, as he netted five times and added five helpers in the Bruins’ first round elimination to the Panthers.
