Stars vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds
Winnipeg is all but assured of winning the NHL’s Central Division and finishing with the most points in the Western Conference, which obviously means home-ice advantage throughout those playoffs. Dallas is currently second in the Central, yet it’s the Stars who are +300 West favourites and +600 leaders to win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup since 1999.
Dallas generally jumped into both favoured roles after landing All-Star forward Mikko Rantanen from Carolina earlier this month at the trade deadline. The Hurricanes had acquired him earlier this season from Colorado but couldn’t agree on a long-term deal with the pending free agent so they flipped him to the Stars, who signed Rantanen to an eight-year, $96 million (U.S) extension.
Vegas is most likely going to win the Pacific Division and Edmonton finish second or third behind also Los Angeles, yet it’s the Oilers who are +400 second-favourites in the West and +800 third-favourites for the Cup.
Edmonton beat Dallas in six games in the 2024 West Finals. This marks the final meeting between them this regular season with them having split two, each winning at home. Rantanen’s Dallas debut was a 5-4 loss at Rogers Arena on March 8 when the Oilers nearly blew a 5-1 lead after two. The clubs have split the past 10 regular-season meetings overall with the over-under 7-3.
Dallas Stars
Dallas won its second game in a row Monday, 3-0 over Minnesota in a possible first-round Western Conference playoff preview. Wyatt Johnston (26th of season), Matt Duchene (27th) and Mason Marchment (18th) had the goals. It was Johnston’s eighth goal of March, among NHL leaders. Thomas Harley assisted on Johnston’s game-winning goal, marking the 15th game winner he has factored on in 2024-25 – the most among all defencemen league-wide.
Jake Oettinger, in his eighth straight home win, made 32 saves for his 12th career shutout, which tied Jon Casey for the sixth-most shutouts in franchise history. Oettinger also tied his backup, Casey DeSmith, for the fifth-most shutouts by an active U.S.-born goaltender, with Rangers backup Jonathan Quick holding the mark of 63. Dallas remains without two key players on injured reserve in forward Tyler Seguin and blueliner Miro Heiskanen. The Stars are 1-4 in their past five on the road.
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton won for the fourth time in five games Saturday, 5-4 over visiting Seattle — so a nice break of days off in between that and this game. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins completed his fourth career hat trick with an empty-netter. He scored at even strength, on the power play, and shorthanded to become the 11th player in Oilers history to score a hat trick with an even-strength, power-play and shorthanded goal. The only others to do so in the past 30 years are Leon Draisaitl (April 1, 2023) and Shawn Horcoff (Jan. 10, 2006).
The Oilers need RNG to step up while superstar forwards Connor McDavid and Draisaitl are out – and neither will play here. Saturday was the first time since McDavid was drafted by the Oilers that both he and Draisaitl were out of the lineup with injuries. Blueliner Darnell Nurse remains one goal shy from passing Charlie Huddy (81) for the second most by an Oilers defenceman behind only Paul Coffey (209). This is the front of a back-to-back, so not clear whether it will be Stuart Skinner (who won Saturday) or Calvin Pickard as whomever doesn’t start Wednesday would Thursday. The over is 7-1 in Edmonton’s past eight at home.
