This is the second of four meetings between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs this season, with Detroit returning to Scotiabank Arena on Dec. 23 and Toronto heading to Motown on Feb. 1. In that latter game, the Red Wings will retire Red Kelly’s No. 4 jersey. Kelly played in Detroit from 1947-60 and for the Maple Leafs from 1960-67. Toronto retired his jersey two years ago.

Red Wings vs Maple Leafs Betting Analysis

The Wings got off to a horrid 0-5-2 start and one of the losses in there was 5-3 at home to Toronto on Oct. 11. Auston Matthews had two goals, both on the power play, and was named the No. 1 star. Morgan Reilly, Mitch Marner and Ron Hainsey (the clincher at 19:39) also scored. Frederik Andersen made 26 saves for the Leafs and Jimmy Howard 30 for the Wings.

Toronto won both home meetings vs. Detroit last season as the Wings really struggled overall. The scores were 6-3 and 4-3. It was the second straight year the Leafs swept the home season series.

The Leafs are 8-1 in the past nine meetings. The under is 13-5 in the previous 18.

Detroit Red Wings

Detroit has been streaky of late, winning two in a row, losing three straight, winning two more and now on a two-game skid following a 6-5 home shootout loss to an excellent Tampa Bay team on Tuesday. The Wings blew leads of 2-0, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-3 (early in the third). They gave up the tying goal with about five minutes left while on the power play. Howard wasn’t very good but still hasn’t suffered a regulation loss in his past five.

Frans Nielsen had a hat trick (four goals on the year) and Gustav Nyquist the other two goals (six on the season). Nyquist took Anthony Mantha‘s place on the top line because Mantha was just lost 4-6 weeks due to a hand injury. Winger Tyler Bertuzzi will serve the second of a two-game suspension vs. Toronto. Detroit is 1-4 in its past five after allowing at least five goals in its previous game.

Toronto Maple Leafs

This is Toronto’s only home game in a stretch of eight – it heads out for five starting Saturday in Boston. The Leafs played an excellent team themselves Tuesday and won a terrific game 4-3 in overtime at Buffalo for a fifth consecutive victory. Matthews had two goals, including the winner at 4:57 of OT. It was his fifth goal in three games since returning from injury. Patrick Marleau sent it there with the tying marker at 14:47 of the third. Andersen allowed three goals on 41 shots. He’s 16-7-0 with 2.32 GAA and .931 SV. William Nylander, who recently got his big extension to end his holdout, could make his season debut on Thursday.
