New York Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Game 3 Prediction, NHL Odds

Payton Matthews | Updated Jun 04, 2022

Are the Rangers a team of destiny? They were down 3-1 in Round 1 vs. Pittsburgh and 3-2 in Round 2 vs. Carolina and now lead the East Finals 2-0 – winning both at home as underdogs.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning are down 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Rangers, but the Bolts are heavy favourites on the NHL odds to win their first home game of the series on Sunday.

Rangers vs. Lightning NHL Playoffs Betting Odds

“They” say any best-of-seven playoff series doesn’t begin until the road team wins. In that regard, the NHL’s Eastern Conference Finals apparently haven’t yet with the New York Rangers winning back-to-back home games as underdogs against the two-time Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

With the Rangers up 2-0, they are -263 favourites (were -127; I don’t think this is over by any means) with the Lightning at +190 (were -105). New York winning in five is the +305 favourite followed by Tampa in seven at +382. That the series finishes in seven is a +176 favourite with six at +196. This writer still favours Tampa in seven.

The home team has won five of the past seven overall in the series.

New York Rangers

Are the Rangers a team of destiny? They were down 3-1 in Round 1 vs. Pittsburgh and 3-2 in Round 2 vs. Carolina and now lead the East Finals 2-0 – winning both at home vs. the Lightning as underdogs. The first game was an unexpected blowout, but Friday was a 3-2 victory. K’Andre Miller (second of playoffs), Kaapo Kaako (second) and Mika Zibanejad (ninth) had the goals. Defenceman Adam Fox had two assists for his sixth multi-point game of these playoffs. That’s tied for No. 2 among Rangers blueliners in history. Zibanejad extended his franchise playoff record home goal streak to six games. Igor Shesterkin had 29 saves to extend his franchise playoff record home winning streak to eight games, the longest in the NHL since 2013. New York did lose its first three on the road in the last round at Carolina but won Game 7. The Rangers are 1-5 in their past six as road dogs.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Rangers are the 25th team in NHL history to take a 2-0 series lead against the defending champions in a best-of-seven series. There have been conflicting reports on whether the Lightning had won 17 or 18 straight games following a playoff loss, and it depends if you count the qualifying round in the bubble. Nikita Kucherov (fifth of playoffs) and Nicolas Paul (third) had the Tampa goals in the Game 2 loss. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 25 of 28 shots. My opinion? The Bolts are still rusty after having so much time off after sweeping the Panthers. There have been seven defending Stanley Cup champions to overcome a 2-0 series deficit. The last were the 2014 Chicago Blackhawks in Round 1 vs. St. Louis. Not predicting that but Tampa wins Game 3.
