The Oilers are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night and have now fallen to defeat in four of their first five home games of the season. The Penguins limp into Edmonton after dropping a 4-3 shootout decision in Calgary on Tuesday night and have now been outscored by a wide 14-7 margin during their current three-game losing streak.

The Oilers are set to hit the ice as solid -210 favourites on the Friday NHL odds. The Penguins trail as +170 underdogs and the total is listed at 6.5.

Penguins vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

While goals have come at a premium for the Oilers during a disappointing 2-4-1 start, Edmonton shooters have consistently run up the score while recording victories in six straight dates with the Penguins. The Oilers have averaged 5.5 goals and 39 shots on goal while limiting the Pens to a paltry 1.5 goals per game during their current head-to-head surge. However, Edmonton skaters face a huge challenge to snap out of their current scoring slump that has produced just nine total goals over their first five home dates.

Things have not gone much better for the Penguins, who have fallen to defeat by multi-goal margin in four of their five losses to date. The club has particularly struggled on the road when facing Western Conference opponents, losing seven straight and surrendering five goals per game over their past five.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Slow starts have quickly emerged as a recurring theme during the Penguins’ current three-game slide. The Pens have potted just one total first-period goal during their current 0-3-0 run and have allowed an average of two goals in the final frame over their past four games.

Evgeni Malkin provided Pittsburgh with an early-season spark, racking up 11 points in his first five games including three straight multi-point performances on the road, but the Russian veteran has been silent during the club’s losing streak, going pointless while recording just three total shots on goal. Sidney Crosby has also cooled off following a hot start, recording just one point in the past three games and just one total goal this season.

Edmonton Oilers

While the Oilers have yet to find their footing as a team, it has not been because of a lack of effort from their biggest stars. Connor McDavid has roared to life after a relatively slow start, tallying eight points in six games, including both goals in Tuesday’s loss to Carolina that ended a four-game scoring swoon on home ice. Leon Draisaitl is also swinging into form during a four-game points streak that featured a two-point performance in last week’s 4-3 home victory over Philadelphia.

However, things have not gone well for last season’s surprise 50-goal man Zach Hyman, who has yet to make his way onto the scoresheet this season despite tallying 12 total shots on goal over his past three outings.
