An in-state rivalry awaits on Wednesday night as the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Philadelphia Flyers.

Both teams are coming off 2025-26 campaigns in which they totalled 98 points and met in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Flyers would win the series 4-2 before ultimately getting swept by the Hurricanes in the second round.

Prior to facing off in the playoffs, the Penguins and Flyers met four times in the regular season. Each team claimed two victories, with both of Philadelphia’s wins coming via shootout.

Penguins vs. Flyers NHL Betting Odds

Last season, the Penguins posted a 41-25-16 record, while the Flyers went 43-27-12. After both teams vastly improved their point totals from 2024-25 to 2025-26, it will be interesting to see which direction they go in 2026-27.

Playing at home, the Flyers enter this contest as slight favourites on the NHL odds board. Philadelphia has moneyline odds of -142, while Pittsburgh has odds of +120 to pull off the modest upset.

On the puck line, Flyers -1.5 is valued at +180, while Pittsburgh +1.5 is -218. The game total is set at 5.5, with odds juiced to the Over at -135 and odds to +114 on the Under.

At +190, Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby has the shortest odds of any player to score a goal in this game. At 39, Crosby has shown no signs of slowing down, potting 29 goals last season.

With odds of +215, Philadelphia’s Porter Martone has the shortest odds of any Flyer to score a goal in this contest. Martone is one of the NHL’s brightest young prospects, and he burst onto the scene with 10 goals in nine regular season games at the end of last season. He then scored two goals against the Penguins in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins will start the new season without winger Bryan Rust. The 12-year NHL veteran suffered an upper-body injury in the preseason finale and has already been ruled out for the season opener. He scored 29 goals and had 65 points in 72 games last season.

Pittsburgh brings back its veteran core of Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Erik Karlsson. That veteran group led the Penguins to a high-scoring season, as Pittsburgh ranked third in the NHL by averaging 3.54 goals per game in 2025-26.

Pittsburgh’s power play also hummed all season, ranking seventh in the league with a 24.1% conversion rate.

In net, the Penguins bring back Arturs Silovs, who made a career-high 39 appearances last season. He did well with the opportunity, going 19-12-8 with a 3.07 goals-against average, but his save percentage sat at a less-than-ideal .887.

Philadelphia Flyers

Travis Konecny led the Flyers with 68 points on 27 goals and 41 assists last season. Trevor Zegras was close behind with 67 points. Both are back this season and are expected to take on leading roles once again.

The Philadelphia power play struggled all season long in 2025-26, ranking dead last in the NHL at 15.6%. If the Flyers want to continue their rise and get back to the playoffs this season, that number needs to increase.

Dan Vladar and Samuel Ersson split time in net last season, but Vladar emerged as the No. 1 option as the season went on. In total, Vladar went 29-14-7 with a 2.42 goals-against average and .906 save percentage over 52 games.

Vladar suffered a shoulder injury last week, so his status for this game remains uncertain.

NHL Prediction: Who Will Win Penguins vs. Flyers?

In this matchup, the Penguins seem to have more offensive potential. The Flyers are a stingy defensive team, but consistent offence could again be hard to come by this season. Pittsburgh has far more proven experience and production on its roster, even with Rust sidelined. Laying this juice with the Flyers doesn’t seem ideal, and grabbing plus-money odds on the Penguins offers much more value.
