Edmonton Oilers vs. Dallas Stars Game 5 Prediction, NHL Odds

The Edmonton Oilers sit on the verge of returning to the Stanley Cup Final after a 4-1 win in Game 4 on Tuesday. Headed back to the Lone Star State for Game 5 on Thursday, can the Oilers close this series out, or will Dallas live to fight another day?

The Stars are -125 favourites to win Game 5 on the NHL odds, with the total set at 6.0.

Oilers vs. Stars NHL Betting Odds

Dallas is very lucky this series didn’t end up in a sweep. Edmonton has won three straight games and if it wasn’t for a bad third period in Game 1, they would have already punched their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final.

Leading 3-1 in the series, the Oilers enter Game 5 as heavy -1100 favourites to win the Western Conference Final on the NHL futures board. If you still have faith in the Stars, you can get them at +700 to win the next three games.

The favoured exact series result is now Edmonton winning in six games at +180. Dallas in seven games is +700, while the Oilers in seven is +750.

Looking further ahead, Edmonton is a +105 favourite to win the Stanley Cup, slightly ahead of defending champion Florida at +110. The Stars are +1600 to win the Cup, ahead of Carolina at +1700, although the Hurricanes are fighting for their playoffs live on Wednesday night.

Edmonton Oilers

Special teams was a big factor for Edmonton in Game 4. The Oilers went 2-for-3 on the power play and killed off three of four penalties. Leon Draisaitl, Corey Perry, Adam Henrique and Kasperi Kapanen all scored, while Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had two assists. Stuart Skinner tuned aside 28 of 29 shots faced. Skinner has been red-hot, giving up one or less goals in five of his last six starts.

The crushing news for Edmonton in Game 4 was the loss of winger Zach Hyman, who left the game with an upper-body injury in the first period and did not return. Head coach Kris Knoblauch said Hyman is likely done for the year after undergoing surgery on Wednesday for what is believed to be a wrist or arm injury. Hyman, who is fifth on Edmonton with 11 points (5G, 6A), is leading the playoffs with 111 hits, 29 more than the next closest player.

Dallas Stars

Jason Robertson scored for the second straight game on Tuesday, but Dallas once again failed to generate much offence. The two goals from Robertson, the only goals he has these playoffs, are the extent of offence the Stars have managed over the last three games. Leading scorer Mikko Rantanen has been held to just two assists in the series and Wyatt Johnston’s minus-18 rating is the worst plus/minus to this point in the playoffs in decades.

Jake Oettinger was the best player for Dallas in Game 4, turning aside 29 of 31 shots faced (Edmonton had two empty-net goals), but he can only do so much when the Stars are so ineffective on special teams. Dallas has scored just once on eight power play opportunities over the last three games and they’ve given up nine power play goals in this series.
