By the late hours of Sunday night, the Detroit Red Wings will have had quite the last few days. They played at home on Thursday, headed East to play the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon (a 5-3 loss), and now come back home for a Sunday night match. The Edmonton Oilers will have been off since Friday night when they thoroughly outclassed the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0.

Our NHL odds have the Oilers as -190 moneyline favourites and at -1.5 on the puck line.

Oilers vs. Red Wings NHL Betting Odds

One might think that the Oilers, an annual Stanley Cup contender, would dominate matches versus the Red Wings, but not quite. Granted, the last time they crossed paths Edmonton demolished Detroit 8-4. However, the Red Wings have taken two of the six meetings since 2021.

One wild statistic is that in four of the past five matches, the winning side has scored at least five goals.

Much like last season, the Oilers have hit rocky waters in this young 2024-25 campaign. It’s shown in two key statistics that concern betters. For one, Edmonton is only 2-6 ATS. Second, and this is perhaps more surprising, the over is only 2-5-1. Believe it or not, the Oilers have the second-worst attack in the NHL, netting only 2.25 goals per contest. It’s not for lack of trying, as they’ve registered the third most shots on target (277).

Through eight matches, the Detroit Red Wings look a lot like last season. They’re a bit difficult to predict at 4-4 straight up. Lo and behold, that’s also their tally ATS, making Detroit something of a head-scratching proposition. If anything, the under might be a decent bet as the Red Wings only score 2.86 times a game.

Edmonton Oilers

Fans had reason to be worried about midway through Friday night’s contest at home against the Penguins. The Oilers have the worst shooting efficiency in the NHL at 6.5 per cent. As if the hockey gods ordained it, Edmonton blew the doors off Pittsburgh. Well, as far as shots went anyway.

It was still a 0-0 game at the 13-minute mark of the second period when Leon Draisaitl (fourth) blasted a wrist shot off the post and in. That, finally, appeared to open the floodgates. Evan Bouchard would get his second of the campaign with a fine wrist shot of his own in the slot. In the third (as the Oilers already had neatly 40 shots on goal!) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (first) snapped home a clever shot from the slot for a 3-0 lead before Mattias Ekholm (first) got one on the man advantage.

Make the final 4-0. The Oilers can score again.

Detroit Red Wings

Saturday afternoon featured a critical Atlantic Division showdown in Buffalo between the Red Wings and Sabres. Two long-suffering fanbases who would love nothing more than finally see their teams play meaningful April hockey.

Whether it was symptomatic of an early start time or poor tactics, Detroit was sluggish and clumsy in the early goings. It was already 2-0 by the 12-minute mark before Alex DeBrincat cut the deficit in half with his fourth of the season before the first period ended. Momentum shifted back to Buffalo in the second period to make it 3-1, but both Michael Rasmussen (second) – by tapping home a rebound in close – and Lucas Raymond (first) – on a shorthanded rush – gave their fans hope.

That would be all she wrote for the Wings, as an unfortunate bounce off a long wrist shot gifted the Sabres a 4-3 advantage late in the middle frame. They wouldn’t relinquish said lead, although Patrick Kaine ringed a shot off the post moments before Buffalo iced the game with an empty netter to make it a 5-3 final.
