Edmonton Oilers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Prediction, NHL Odds

Things were looking dire for Jay Woodcroft’ ensemble since Super Bowl Sunday. A string of four losses put a dent into the team’s chances of making a play for the Pacific Division. They righted the ship by defeating the Flyers on Tuesday evening. Pittsburgh is still looking to revert to winning ways, having fallen twice in a row at home and three times overall.

The NHL odds place Edmonton down with heavy chalk at -254. The over-under sits at higher than normal 7.

Oilers vs. Penguins NHL Betting Odds

Edmonton has had its way with the Pennsylvanian-based club since the end of 2021. While only three contests have been held, it’s been a clean sweep so far for the Oilers. Their most recent battle transpired earlier this season in October when the home side sent the Pens packing 6-3. In fact, none of the finals have been close. 5-1, 5-2, and 6-3.

The Oilers are both a high-scoring team and a mediocre defensive one. Their attack ranks first in the entire NHL with 3.76 markers per outing. Conversely, the club sits in 21st with respect to goals conceding (3.26 a match). As such, it comes as no surprise to learn that the Over has connected in seven of their previous 10 contests. This is a big road test, as they have kneeled before their opponents three times in the past four away contests. What had been a strength (being on the road) is slowly turning into a weakness.

Mike Sullivan’s side could benefit from a win here just as much as his opposite number. Pittsburgh has slipped up three times in a row, each time against a divisional rival (Islanders twice and Devils once). Furthermore, the last two were at home and on both occasions they claimed early 1-0 leads, only to let the opportunities pass them by. The only two victories they’ve earned in six games came against relatively easy competition – Sharks and Ducks – so they should take this game as a chance to make a statement.

Edmonton Oilers

Philadelphia didn’t make it easy on the favoured Oilers, but in the end the usual suspects got the job done just before the team packed its bags for a road swing.

Truth be told, for as mediocre as the Flyers have been this season, they appear to have enjoyed their time in Alberta for the first five periods. They beat Calgary on Monday, and Tuesday night led Edmonton 2-1 after two periods, limiting the Oilers offence to 10 shots in the process. Given the home side’s goaltending woes this year, the opening score by which Noah Cates (ninth) surprised Stuart Skinner on a wrap-around might have made some fans think “Uh-oh.” But the Oilers had to win this one, and to their credit they pushed as mightily as possible, eventually breaking down the Philly defence. Goals came from Tyson Barrie (10th), Leon Draisaitl (34th) and, of course, Connor McDavid (43rd) on a sneaky game-winner. Oilers take it, 4-2.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins

Teams such as the Penguins who are in a dogfight for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference can’t keep letting opportunities slip away at home. Warning signs came on Saturday when, after scoring first against New Jersey, they fell 5-2.

Then on Monday night against the Islanders, they tripped up again. Furthermore, it was another night when they opened the contest with quality and intent. Jake Guentzel tallied his 24th thanks to a smart pass by talisman Sidney Crosby. In fairness to the hosts, they did look like the better outfit for much of the night. They launched an incredible 46 shots in direction of New York’s goal. The only problem was that they had to score on Ilya Sorokin, something few teams have had success with. Tristan Jarry made a couple of sloppy plays and that was enough to hand New York a 4-2 win.
