There’s no rest for either club, as both are coming off road outings last night before meeting up in Denver. The Oilers came back into Utah yesterday to earn a 4-3 overtime victory, while the Avalanche fell 5-3 at Dallas last night.

Edmonton’s win positioned them into the Western Conference’s final playoff spot, where they have a tiebreaker over Colorado as both teams stand at 26 points. It’s been a surprising start for both clubs considering each have Stanley Cup aspirations; but that just makes Saturday’s tilt even more intriguing as it can mark the start of a run, as a statement victory for one side.

Puck drop at Ball Arena gets started at 10 p.m. EST with the Avalanche a slight -120 moneyline favourite on home ice and the total at 6.5 on the NHL odds.

In back-to-back spots in hockey, the first thing to key in on is the goaltending situations. Edmonton saved Stuart Skinner for this game against Colorado, playing backup Calvin Pickard last night. Colorado went with starter yesterday, meaning Justus Annunen is in line to be between the pipes for the Avs against Edmonton. And both Skinner and Annunen have yet to find any groove this season — Skinner’s 7-6-2 with an .882 save percentage, and Annunen 6-4 with an .882 save percentage. The over is also now 10-2-1 in Colorado’s 13 home games this season, so you know what to do with this information: anticipate lots of goals Saturday.

Edmonton has historically struggled at Colorado too, dropping seven of their last eight trips to Denver. The Avs are also 5-1 overall in their last six home outings.

Edmonton Oilers

One of the most surprising statistics about this season is Edmonton ranks 22nd in the NHL with an 18.3 power-play percentage. But Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid boosted that number yesterday when they each scored power-play markers with minutes of each other. McDavid got the primary assist on Draisaitl’s too, which made it three multi-point outings in McDavid’s last four games. McDavid also now has five goals in that four-game span too.

There’s also a chance Zach Hyman returns to Edmonton’s lineup here. Hyman has missed Edmonton’s last two games with an undisclosed injury, but is travelling with the team. After coming off career highs in nearly every category last season, Hyman has just eight points in 20 appearances this season.

Colorado Avalanche

At some point the Avalanche may just have to shrug their shoulders and understand they need to score about four goals per game to have a chance at winning. Yesterday was another game where the Avalanche held their opponent to under 25 shots, yet trailed 4-3 late and ultimately lost after an empty-netter allowed.

Colorado’s big guns all got in on the scoring action yesterday though as Valeri Nichushkin, Artturi Lehkonen, and Mikko Rantanen all scored. Cale Makar notched two assists, getting the star defenceman to 30 points on the season. Makar, Rantanen, and scoring leader Nathan MacKinnon all have at least 30 points for Colorado. Rantanen’s goal yesterday was his 10th goal this month.
