The Montreal Canadiens are off to the best start in franchise history and are new Stanley Cup favourites.

After starting the season 6-0, the Montreal Canadiens are now the favourites to win the Stanley Cup in NHL futures odds.

They opened the season at +1000 to win the Cup, in a group that was set just behind the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, but everything has gone right for the Canadiens since then. Carey Price was just named the NHL’s First Star of the week after going 3-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, .963 save percentage and one shutout.

We’ve come to expect phenomenal numbers from Price. He won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player and the Vezina as the NHL’s top goaltender last year and is generally considered the best goalie in the world.  What’s different this year is Montreal’s play in front of Price.

“The support is better,” said defenceman P.K. Subban. “When you have support and you’re confident that the guy is going to be there to pick up the puck or the guy is going to be there for that little bump pass, it goes a long way.

“I notice that when we’re icing the puck a lot is when we’re not all on the same page. Sometimes that’s not about the coaching; I think that’s more just the guys on the ice making sure that they’re doing the right things.”

There are a lot of good things going on as the Canadiens head into Tuesday’s date with the 5-1 St. Louis Blues as -145 favourites. After struggling to score last year, Montreal currently ranks fight in the league averaging 3.3 goals per game and second with 34 shots per game. Spending more time in the opposition’s end is a big reason why the Canadiens are now favourites to win the franchise’s 25th Stanley Cup.
