It’s the front end of a back-to-back for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday as they visit the Edmonton Oilers in what could be a very high-scoring game between two of the best offensive teams in the league. Toronto opened as a short favourite to win on the NHL odds.

Wednesday is the first of two regular-season meetings between the clubs with Edmonton visiting Scotiabank Arena on March 11. Toronto swept last year, including a 5-1 win at Rogers Place.
William Nylander (3A) and Auston Matthews (2G, 1A) led the Leafs with three points each in the series. Nylander was also a team-best plus-four. Jack Campbell was in net for both but now is with Edmonton. Journeyman Colton Sceviour (1G, 1A) led the Oilers with two points. He’s not in the NHL this year. Leon Draisaitl had an assist, and Connor McDavid was scoreless in his one game. Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen made the starts in net.
The road team is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto won its third game in a row and opened a challenging five-game road trip with a 5-1 win in Seattle on Sunday – the Kraken led 1-0 early. Auston Matthews had two goals and is up to 28 on the year in his 53 games. Mark Giordano (fourth of season), John Tavares (27th) and Timothy Liljegren (fifth) had the other goals. Mitch Marner had three assists, and William Nylander and Michael Bunting each had two assists. Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves.
Wednesday should be the Leafs debut of two players acquired Monday from Chicago in winger Sam Lafferty and defenceman Jake McCabe in exchange for Joey Anderson, Pavel Gogolev, a 2025 first-round pick and a 2026 second-round selection. Lafferty had 10 goals and 11 assists with the Blackhawks and McCabe two goals, 18 assists and a plus-seven rating on a bad team. He was the key part of that deal. The Leafs are 6-1 in their past seven vs. a team with a winning record.
Edmonton Oilers
We projected the Oilers to lose 4-3 at home to NHL-best Boston on Monday, and they lost 3-2. Connor McDavid was the No. 1 star with both goals to reach 50 in a season for the first time in his career. It was the Hart Trophy favourite’s fourth straight multi-goal game. McDavid became the ninth active player with at least one 50-goal season and required the fewest games to hit the milestone among all current skaters. McDavid was first player to reach the 50-goal mark in 61 or fewer games since 1995-96, when three skaters did so.
Leon Draisaitl’s seven-game goal streak ended, but he had an assist to extend his points streak to nine games in a row. Klim Kostin had an assist after missing the previous five with an illness. Evander Kane was out again and is considered day-to-day. The Oilers are 2-6 in their past eight games.
