Maple Leafs vs. Devils NHL Betting Odds

Since the New Jersey Devils lost in the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals, they haven’t come close to getting back there and have only made the playoffs twice in that span. There are many reasons why, but the biggest generally was not being able to find a true No. 1 goaltender after Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur’s career ended with the club.

For years, New Jersey reportedly had been targeting a top goalie in trade and had long been rumoured to especially be targeting Calgary’s Jacob Markstrom. This summer, the Devils got him for a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and defenceman Kevin Bahl. Markstrom has changed everything for New Jersey as it is now a legitimate Eastern Conference contender and sitting second in the Metropolitan Division behind Washington — and +280 to win it. But if the Devils are serious about contending, they have to do better than 7-6-2 on home ice as is their current record.

This marks the second of three matchups this season between the clubs with the finale on Jan. 16 in Toronto. On Oct. 10 in New Jersey, the Leafs won 4-2 – jumping out to a 3-0 lead by 14:46 of the first. Dennis Hildeby was in net for Toronto in his NHL debut and Markstrom was for the Devils. That was the home debut of Devils coach Sheldon Keefe, who was fired last May after guiding Toronto for five seasons.

Toronto is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings, and the over is 4-1 in the past five.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto’s offence has gone cold in back-to-back losses as it was beaten 5-2 in Pittsburgh on Saturday – the score was a bit misleading as it was 2-2 early in the third period, and the Penguins had two empty-net goals. Mitch Marner (10th of season) and William Nylander (17th) had the Leafs’ goals. Marner extended his road points streak to eight games. He also had an assist for his 15th multi-point game of the season, 11 of which have been in his last 14 games. Over his past 19 games, Marner had nine goals and 22 assists. Nylander has four points (3G, 1A) in his last five games.

Auston Matthews had two assists, his third multi-assist game of the season and his sixth multi-point game. He has eight points (3G, 5A) in his last six games. Nylander, Marner and Matthews have now factored on the same goal 28 times, tied with George Armstrong, Dave Keon and Frank Mahovlich for the ninth most by a Maple Leafs forward trio in history. Joseph Woll was in net Saturday, so it should be Anthony Stolarz (8-5-2, 2.22 GAA, .924 SV) for this one. He has struggled on the road at 1-2-2 with a 3.01 GAA. Toronto has won eight straight games at New Jersey.

New Jersey Devils

New Jersey had a two-game winning streak snapped Sunday in a 4-0 home loss to Colorado, but that was with backup Jake Allen in net — and the Devils have lost the past two time he has started. It will be Jacob Markstrom here, and the Swede is 13-6-1 with a 2.51 GAA and. 907 SV in his first season with the Devils. He personally has won three straight outings.

The Devils have a ton of forward talent, but Sunday was the fifth time they have been blanked this season and all have occurred in the past 18 games. New Jersey did “score” twice in the first period but both goals were waved off and should have been. Jesper Bratt leads the club with 37 points and Nico Hischier does with 15 goals. The over is 5-2 in New Jersey’s past seven against Atlantic Division foes.
