The home team in this series is 4-1 in the last 5 games.
The Lightning are the favourites to win the natural disaster series as it opens tonight in Raleigh North Carolina. The matchup most people predicted is finally happening, as the two Central Division powerhouses battle for a spot in the semi-final.
Lightning vs. Hurricanes Stanley Cup Odds
Number three seeded Tampa Bay is the -173 favourite to win the series, although they finished the season series tied at four games a piece with the Hurricanes. Both teams are coming fresh off a six game series in round one where the Carolina Hurricanes were undefeated at home. Oddsmakers have the odds split at -110 on both sides, but a whopping 73 percent are placing their bets on the away team Tampa Bay.
Both of these squads have a dangerous offence, giving the series the potential to be high scoring. In round one, the Bolts averaged four goals a game and the Hurricanes averaged 3.67. In the regular season they were over three goals a game as well.
Carolina only covered the spread twice in six opportunities in round one both times on home ice. Both clubs hold a record of 27-35 against the spread this year.
Tampa Bay Lightning
The defending Stanley Cup champions in Tampa Bay look hungry to repeat after a gruesome first round battle against the Florida Panthers. It took them six games to rout the high scoring Panthers coming out with a healthy roster for round two.
Round one was filled with penalties which played to Tampa’s advantage. Their powerplay is running at 40 percent right now, second highest in the NHL. The special teams will need to be just as good against Carolina who defends much better than the Panthers.
Andrei Vasilevskiy used round one to remind everyone that he is one of the games best netminders. He is probably the Vezina Trophy favourite after posting a .925 save percentage and 2.21 goals against average in 42 games during the regular season. He shutout Florida in game six to end their season, putting his save percentage at .929 in the playoffs.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes handled business in round one winning all three games in their home barn. Nashville managed two wins but needed double overtime to put the Canes away both times. Sebastien Aho scored the overtime winner in game six to cap off their third period comeback to end Nashville’s season. Aho is no doubt a playoff performer, posting 31 points in 29 games since the 2019 postseason.
Rookie goalie Alex Nedeljkovic will really be put to the test in round two against a much more dangerous offence. He has been lights out through round one posting a .922 save percentage, a 2.22 goals against average and shut the Preds out in game two.
Captain Jordan Staal who has played over 500 games with the club in the past nine years, is turning back the clock. He has scored four goals and added an assist so far this postseason, in his 102 career playoff games he’s picked up 31 goals and 51 points.
