Friday night fans gathered for the first scheduled clash of the campaign in Seattle, a game the Oilers won handily 7-2.

Jay Woodcroft’s Oilers sit as -1.5 favourites on the NHL odds (+156 on the puck line) and the over-under is established at 6.5 goals.

As mentioned, there is some very recent history between the sides. On Friday night Edmonton visited Seattle in Washington state. At the time they had been on a funky sequence of winning more often away from Rogers Place than in front of their fans. That continued against Kraken, who looked meek, withering against Edmonton’s high-flying offence. By the time the opening 20 minutes were settled, the visitors held a 4-0 lead, an insurmountable deficit for the home side.

Covering spreads has mostly been a successful venture for the Kraken, what with their decent 20-15 record. However, recent weeks have seen much inconsistency. The squad hasn’t earned the same result for nine consecutive games. We have to go back an entire month (Dec 3rd-9th) to the last time that happened, and even then it was three straight failures to cover.

For its part, Edmonton has not achieved similar success as last year, and that’s shown in the 19-19 tally against the puck line. Furthermore, a worrisome statistic, at least for tonight’s game, is that the team is playing sub-.500 hockey at Rogers Place. They only sport a 9-10-1 record at home. Conversely, they’ve achieved an 11-6-1 record when playing away.

Seattle Kraken

It was a weekend of lows and highs for Dave Hakstol’s unit. Just before the New Year’s celebrations, they were hammered by the Oilers 7-2, a game for which the notion of competitiveness evaporated before the first period had even concluded.

They remained in the confines of Climate Pledge Arena for Sunday’s date with the New York Islanders. This time they did not spoil the opportunity for points. Were it not for heroic examples of goaltending from Islander Ilya Sorokin, the final surely would have been far worse than 4-1 (which included an empty net goal for that matter). It was an encouraging effort, for it not only brought a three-game losing streak to a close, but several different scorers contributed: Adam Larsson (4th), Eeli Tolvanen (3rd), Oliver Bjorkstrand (5th), and Brandon Tanev (7th). Seattle doesn’t have any superstar snipers, so they have to rely on offence by committee.

Edmonton Oilers

The home woes continued for the Oilers on Saturday night against the visiting Winnipeg Jets, losing 2-1. In fairness, Winnipeg is having a better season than Edmonton, albeit not by much. Nevertheless, when one considers how well the Albertan squad performs on the road, it’s a bit frustrating to witness them fumble opportunities at home, where they should be winning more often.

It wasn’t as if they didn’t try. Connor McDavid, among several other teammates, was flying on Saturday. The scoring chances he alone created would normally find their way to the back of the net, but Jets netminder Conner Hellebuyck was sensational every time. The Oilers even hit the post! It was just one of those nights. The home side’s goalie, Jack Campbell, didn’t do them any favours either. He only faced 17 shots, even two sneaked by him, thus making the difference in the final score. In fact, Campbell has not lived up to his duties as a backup to Stuart Skinner with his 8-7-1 record and whopping 3.90 goals against average.
