Seattle Kraken vs. Colorado Avalanche Game 5 Prediction, Odds

The Kraken silenced the naysayers with arguably their best performance of the postseason in Game 4 on Monday night, outshooting the Avs by a wide 43-22 margin while claiming a 3-2 overtime win to even the series at two games apiece. With Monday’s loss, the Avalanche saw a 12-game win streak on the road come to an end. However, the defending Stanley Cup champions have managed to avoid consecutive defeats while winning 19 of their past 25 overall contests.

The Kraken’s heroics on Monday night have failed to give them a big lift on the Wednesday NHL odds, where they are pegged as +165 road underdogs. The Avalanche are perched as -203 favourites to bounce back in Game 5,

With Monday’s win, the Kraken extended their respectable track record against the Avs. The Kraken have now topped Colorado in five of their past eight meetings including wins in three of four visits to Ball Arena. Game 4 also extended a steady run for the UNDER, which has paid out seven times over that stretch, with the total failing to top five in each of their past four clashes in Colorado.

The Kraken remain long shots to ultimately knock off the defending champs, sporting +222 odds on the NHL playoff series prices, while the Avalanche are listed as diminished -256 chalk.

Seattle Kraken

Once again, the supporting cast came up big in Seattle’s overtime win in Game 4. Daniel Sprong made the most of his limited ice time on Monday night, scoring his first goal in seven games, and setting up Jordan Eberle’s game winner in overtime. Rearguard Will Borgen also got in on the scoring with his first marker in 10 games. However, this club desperately needs more production from their biggest stars. While Eberle’s game winner was obviously welcome, it marked the 32-year-old’s only goal in seven games. Matty Beniers has also scored just once in six outings. The team’s leading scorer during the regular season, Jared McCann has not scored in seven outings and is now sidelined indefinitely from a head injury resulting from Cale Makar’s chap shot in Game 4. That adds to the pressure on netminder Philipp Grubauer, who recovered from a rough outing in Game 3 to preserve the win on Monday, and has allowed just two goals per game over four appearances in Colorado this season.

Colorado Avalanche

In addition to letting the Kraken back into the series with their Game 4 loss, the Avalanche will be without Cale Makar, who was fortunate to escape with just a one-game suspension for his vicious unprovoked attack on McCann on Monday night. Makar has anchored a stingy Colorado defence that ranked ninth in the NHL during the regular season and also picked up three points in the team’s two wins so far in the series. However, Mikko Rantanen continued to roll in Game 4, tallying two goals for a second straight game, but has scored just five times in his past 13 appearances.

Predictions

The loss of McCann is a huge blow to a Kraken’s squad that has struggled to generate offence, and will need another full team effort if they are to push the Avalanche to the brink. Look for Grubauer to stand tall once again against his former teammates in a game that gets settled by whoever scores last.
