Connor McDavid and co are entering the season with higher expectations than ever, after coming just a goal short of the Stanley Cup in June. The Jets are looking to get back to the postseason for the third year in a row after back-to-back early exits.

The NHL odds have Edmonton as a -170 favourite to win with the total set at 6.5. Puck drop from Rogers Place is set for 10:00 PM ET.

Jets vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

The season opener will be the first of three meetings this season between the Canadian squads. In their three-game set last season, Edmonton dropped the first meeting 3-2 in overtime before rallying to take the next two, taking the series 2-1. All meetings were very close battles, two of which needed extra time and they hit the UNDER twice.

Both teams have some interesting lines on the NHL Futures board starting with Edmonton on top of the Stanley Cup Winner board at a +900. They are also the favourite to win the Pacific Divison at +105 with their OVER/UNDER on points set at 108.5. On the Jets side, they open with -189 odds of making the postseason in a very tough Central Division. Their OVER/UNDER for points this season is set at 96.5.

Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg’s core remained intact for the most part this offseason, with Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Josh Morrisey and Nikolaj Ehlers all coming off of 60+ point seasons. Their second line is where the team fell off significantly losing deadline pickups Sean Monohan and Tyler Toffoli. They will rely on their younger players like Cole Perfetti to take a step forward.

It is always encouraging when your team has the reigning Vezina Trophy winner in goal and Connor Hellebuyck is listed at +600 to win it again, behind only Igor Shesterkin (+550) of the Rangers. The Jets backstop appeared in 60 games last season, posting a 37-19-4 record with a league-leading .921 save percentage.

One year removed from his 2022-23 campaign where he put up a career-high 76 points and finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting, Morrisey is listed as the 10th favourite for the award this season (+3000).

Edmonton Oilers

If this squad wants to win the Pacific Division, they will need to get off to a better start this season after dropping 10 of their first 12 in 2023-24. They made up for that slow start in historic fashion, ripping off 16 straight wins from December 21st through January 27th, rocketing them from 13th in the division to 6th.

The Oilers’ offence was scary enough last season, scoring over 3.5 goals per game; good for third highest in the league. This year they look to be even more dangerous after adding veteran forwards Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson over the summer, both of which have scored over 60 points at least twice in their careers. The money spent at the top of the lineup came at the expense of their depth, losing four of their bottom six forwards.

To no one’s surprise, McDavid can be found at the top of most of our Award Prop Boards as the favourite to win the Art Ross (-154) and Hart (+150) and fifth for the Rocket Richard (+900). His season points are set at 130.5 which he has surpassed in both of the past two seasons.
