The New York Rangers are headed back to Madison Square Garden on Sunday as they look to dig themselves out of an 0-2 hole in their second-round playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Canes were supposed to be vulnerable without No. 1 netminder Frederik Andersen, but Antti Raanta has filled in more than capably – although he was shaky during his road outings in Boston in Round 1 and that’s why we will lead New York in this game. Brutal beat for Rangers +1.5 puckline backers in Game 2 as Carolina scored an empty-netter with two seconds left to win 2-0. It was Raanta’s first career playoff shutout.
Sebastian Aho had a goal and assist as the Canes set a franchise record for the longest home winning streak in a postseason at six in a row. Carolina is the first team since Nashville in 2017 to win each of its first six playoff home games. But again, they looked way different on the road in Round 1. The Canes are 4-0 in their past four as road favourites.
New York Rangers
Likely Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin wasn’t great in Round 1 for the Rangers but has been in this series – the goal he gave up in Game 2 was short-handed but definitely not his fault. New York was 0-for-4 on the power play. The Rangers are middle of the pack of the playoff teams at 25 per cent with the man advantage.
What Carolina has done is shut down the New York stars of Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, and Artemi Panarin. They have combined for only seven shots on goal in the series. They were New York’s three leading goal-scorers during the regular season. The Rangers are 4-1 in their past five at home.
