For two periods of Game 4, it looked like the Carolina Hurricanes were going to even up their series with the Boston Bruins at two games apiece…and then the Hurricanes packed it in and left. After such a pathetic third period on Monday where the Hurricanes completely flatlined, is there anything they can possibly do to get back in this series on Wednesday?

Hurricanes vs. Bruins NHL Stanley Cup Odds

The Hurricanes continue to struggle in this series as they’ve now dropped 19 of the last 26 meetings. This team is also 8-18 in their last 25 against teams with a winning percentage above .600 as the Bruins do. For what it’s worth, under is 5-1 in the last six get togethers.

As for Boston, the good news is that the favorite has won 21 of the last 29 in this series. They’re also now 8-1 in their last nine on one day’s rest. Under has cashed in five of the last seven showdowns.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes were an absolute embarrassment in Game 4. It’s so easy to forget just how well they played in the first two periods of the game, building a comfortable 2-0 lead, because they were a complete farce in the third period. It was among the worst periods of playoff hockey we’ve ever witnessed. Not only did the Hurricanes give up three goals in about a three-minute span (and four goals in seven minutes), they also didn’t get a single shot on net until the 18:33 mark of the period. Yes, they could even muster a single shot on net before then; that’s how bad things got

The big issue here is how do the Hurricanes pick up the pieces? They were up 2-0 in the third period of a game where the Bruins were missing their top scorer and their top goalie. Instead, the Hurricanes blew and now have to somehow win three of the next four.

Boston Bruins

One story from Monday will be the fact that the Bruins broke the Hurricanes but a different angle will be that the Bruins finally woke up. They played poorly in their preliminary round, failing to win a single game. Then they were shaky in the first few games with Carolina, earning a couple of wins but not really looking dominant for long periods of time. The two teams mostly looked even. On Monday, in the third period, we saw the difference: when the Bruins flip the switch, they can’t be stopped.

The Bruins offense is delivering in this series as they’ve now scored three or more goals in three of the four games. They’re generating great chances even without Pastrnak in the lineup. It’s just hard to see Carolina getting up off the mat after Game 4.
