After splitting games on Thursday and Saturday, the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators are meeting on Monday for the third of four straight matchups.

Calgary is a -170 favourite to win on the NHL odds with a total of 6.0.

Flames vs. Senators Betting Analysis

These teams have played each other twice in the last week and if those games are any indication, this could be a high scoring affair.  Ottawa struck first with a 6-1 win on Thursday, while Calgary hit back with a 6-3 win on Saturday.  Sports Interaction bettors have been heavily favouring the Flames with 81 per cent taking Calgary and 77 per cent taking the Over.

For the most part, Calgary has been fairly successful against Ottawa lately.  The Flames have won seven of the last 10 games between these teams.  Calgary is 10-12 against the spread overall this season, covering five times on the road.  Scoring has come easier outside of the Saddledome for Calgary as they have hit the Over six times on the road compared to three times at home.

One thing that has been consistent for Ottawa is that home games against the Flames bring lots of scoring.  The total has gone Over in seven of the last 10 games between these teams in Ottawa.  The Sens have hit the Over in four of their last five games overall and in five of 11 homes games this season.  Ottawa is 11-12 ATS overall, covering seven times at home.

Calgary Flames

Calgary is nearing the end of a brutal stretch of games that sees them play seven times in 11 days across four different cities.  Through the first six of those games, the Flames have gone 2-3-1 and they need a win on Monday to stay above .500 on the season.  Perhaps overshadowed by Calgary’s poor performance as a team, has been the play of Andrew Mangiapane.  After not scoring in the first seven games of the year, Mangiapane has hit another goalscoring gear and his eight goals on the year trails only Johnny Gaudreau (9) on the Flames.

The main question surrounding Calgary centres on the availability of goaltender Jacob Markstrom.  The Flames’ No. 1 netminder has missed the last four games with an upper-body injury.  Markstrom is currently listed as day-to-day and it hasn’t been announced if he’ll be good to go for Monday.  If Markstrom can’t make it back, David Rittich will likely make his fifth straight start. Over the last four games Rittich has posted a 2.25 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.  Rittich posted one shutout, but was also pulled in one of those games.

Ottawa Senators

After projections of a bad year for the Senators and an even worse start to the season for them, Ottawa is essentially playing with house money at this point.  No one is expecting anything from this team, which makes every win a nice surprise and every nine-game losing streak expected.  As harsh as the Sens’ season has been, Saturday’s loss actually snapped a surprise three game win streak for Ottawa.  The Senators are 5-2-0 in their last seven games and the three game win streak was their longest since November 2019.  Ouch, that last stat puts what Ottawa fans have gone through over the last few years into perspective.

Despite all the negativity, there should be optimism for the future in Ottawa.  Six of the Sens’ top seven point leaders are 24-years-old or younger.  The 21-year-old Brady Tkachuk leads the team in goals (9) and points (16).  The 24-year-old Thomas Chabot leads the team in assists (11) and average time on ice per game (25:39).  And finally, 21-year-old Josh Norris (4G, 8A) and 19-year-old Tim Stutzle (5G, 7A) are both within the top-four of the rookie points race.
