The Calgary Flames look to string together five straight wins for the first time in over two-and-a-half years when they rekindle their Battle of Alberta rivalry with the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night in NHL betting action at Rogers Place. The Flames are coming off a decisive 5-2 victory over Toronto on Monday night, and have allowed just six total goals while winning four straight. Conversely, the Oilers are mired in their first losing streak of the season after following up Saturday’s lopsided 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Maple Leafs with a 4-3 shootout loss to Detroit on Monday night.

The Oilers have emerging as lofty -222 favourites on the Wednesday NHL odds. The Flames trail as +180 underdogs and the total is listed at 6.5.

Flames vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds

The Flames took three of four from the Oilers last season, including an early-season 4-3 shootout victory at Rogers Place. The Flames have picked up at least a point in each of their three most recent visits to Edmonton, four of the contests on their current 3-1-1 head-to-head run have been settled by just a single goal, and the UNDER has gone 7-3 in their past 10 dates.

The Flames have taken their fans on somewhat of a rollercoaster ride during the first month of the campaign, winning five of their past six after opening their schedule with five straight crushing losses. Calgary was outscored by a wide 27-8 combined margin during that season-opening swoon, but have outgunned opponents by a 14-6 margin on their current 4-0-0 run.

The Oilers emerged as the NHL’s highest scoring team during an 8-1-1 run to start the season, potting 4.70 goals per game while limiting opponents to two or fewer goals five times. But Edmonton has been outscored by a wide 11-5 margin during its two-game slide, extending a steady 5-0 run for the OVER in NHL totals betting.

Calgary Flames

The Flames completed the sweep of a four-game homestand with Monday’s win over the Leafs, snapping Toronto’s four-game winning streak in the process. Rookie Matvei Gridin led the way with two goals and an assist. And Joel Farabee extended his points streak to five games with his second straight multi-point performance while the Flames continued to demonstrate the improved defensive discipline that has driven their turnaround. Goaltending has also been a major factor in the Flames’ resurgence. Devin Cooley has earned the win in four consecutive starts, posting a 1.50 goals-against average and .955 save percentage during that stretch, and is projected to start Wednesday after Dustin Wolf handled Monday’s victory over Toronto.

The Flames have also established an unusual scoring trend, winning 60 consecutive games when scoring 4+ goals, the third-longest such streak in NHL history. However, the club remains without Jonathan Huberdeau, who is recovering from hip surgery, while Samuel Honzek is also sidelined with a lower-body injury. Captain Mikael Backlund’s availability remains uncertain due to an upper-body injury.

Edmonton Oilers

Connor McDavid leads the NHL with 34 points, including eight goals and 26 assists through 12 games. In addition, McDavid has recorded at least one assist in every game this season. That ties the NHL record for the longest season-opening assist streak, which he now shares with Wayne Gretzky, Ken Linseman and Sebastian Aho. Leon Draisaitl has racked up 12 goals and 24 points through 12 games and earned the NHL’s First Star of the Week on Monday. But with McDavid, Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, and Vasily Podkolzin accounting for 35 of the team’s 51 goals, this club is in desperate need of secondary scoring.

Zach Hyman’s availability remains uncertain after he struck his head against the glass during Monday’s loss to Detroit. And the absence of injured goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi has not helped matters. Tristan Jarry has stopped just 51 of 59 total shots over the past two games, with the club allowing 5.33 goals per game over their past three outings.
