Flames vs. Oilers NHL Betting Odds
The Oilers have held the edge recent in their storied rivalry with the Flames. Edmonton claimed victory in two of three meetings last season, and in seven of nine dates overall, but have seen their two defeats over that stretch come over the course of their past three head-to-head clashes on home ice. Victories in seven of their final 10 scheduled home games helped lift the Oilers into third place in the Pacific Division last season. In addition, the club also claimed three points in a pair of matchups with Calgary to kick off the NHL preseason, which they closed out with a 4-2-2.
After reaching the Stanley Cup Final in the past two seasons, the Oilers open the new campaign deadlocked with Vegas as +800 co-favourites on the Stanley Cup odds, and are also knotted with the Golden Knights as a +145 bet to win the Pacific Division crown. Conversely, the Flames are expected to take a step back this season, with their OVER/UNDER regular season point total pegged at just 83.5 and their odds to win the Pacific pegged at a distant +4000.
Calgary Flames
The Flames were among the lowest scoring teams in the NHL last season, potting just 2.68 goals per game. Those woes carried over into the preseason, with the club averaging just 2.13 goals per game while compiling a middling 3-4-1 record that featured three defeats by multi-goal margins. The absence of veteran playmaker Jonathan Huberdeau does not help matters. The crafty 32-year-old will miss Wednesday’s contest after being placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury, which he likely suffered in a collision with goaltender Kevin Lankinen that forced him to leave the game in last week’s preseason date with Vancouver. Huberdeau’s absence opens the door for rookie Matvei Gridin to take on a bigger role in his NHL debut. Selected by the Flames in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft, the 19-year-old Russian is making the leap to the NHL after racking up 36 goals and 43 assists in just 56 games in his lone season of major junior hockey with the Shawinigan Cataractes.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers captures headlines earlier this week by signing superstar Connor McDavid to a two-year contract extension at a sizeable hometown discount, sending a signal to both fans and rivals that the time is now for this team to reach the promised land. McDavid once again played a huge role in the Oilers’ success while compiling 100 points in just 67 game appearances last season. Unsurprisingly, McDavid opens the schedule leading the way on the NHL player props as +160 chalk to claim the Art Ross Trophy and +200 chalk to raise the Hart Trophy. However, the Oil return to action facing some injury concerns. The club will be without versatile forward Zach Hyman indefinitely after he was placed on the LTIR earlier this week with a wrist injury. Veteran Mattias Janmark will also miss Wednesday’s game after landing on the IR with an undisclosed injury while rearguard is listed as day-to-day, also with an undisclosed ailment.
