Calgary Flames vs. Philadelphia Flyers Prediction, NHL Odds

It’s the second of a back-to-back for both teams on Sunday night when Calgary visits Philadelphia for the lone time this season. The Flyers are -145 favourites on the NHL odds with a total of 5.5 goals.

Flames vs. Flyers NHL Betting Odds

Former Calgary goaltender Dan Vladar is now on the Flyers and having a fine season but started Saturday’s game in Toronto so most likely won’t get to face his former club on Sunday.

These clubs had split three straight season series until Calgary swept last season, both by scores of 6-3. Jonathan Huberdeau (2G, 4A) led the Flames with six points, while Nazem Kadri (3G, 1A) and MacKenzie Weegar (2G, 2A) each had four points. American Dustin Wolf was in net for both and had a 3.02 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. But we probably don’t see him on Sunday because he started Saturday in Nashville.

Five different players led the Flyers with two points, led by top-line centre Sean Couturier (1G, 1A). But the 32-year-old missed Saturday’s game with an upper-body injury and is questionable Sunday. He’s second on the team with nine points (2G, 7A).

Calgary Flames

The Flames will be trying to avoid a winless four-game trip on Sunday as they were beaten 4-2 in Nashville on Saturday. It was 3-0 by 14:17 of the first period. Jonathan Huberdeau (second goal of season) and Joel Farabee (second) made it interesting in the third period, but the Preds clinched it with an empty netter at 19:36. Dustin Wolf and Devin Cooley combined to make 20 saves. Wolf was the starter but pulled after allowing three goals on just 11 shots so perhaps he does have a shot to play Sunday, although you’d think it would be Cooley’s turn to start. He didn’t allow a goal on 12 shots in relief Saturday and is 0-1-1 with a 2.52 GAA and .933 SV on the season. Cooley ranks second in the NHL in mid-range save percentage at .955. Calgary is 1-6-1 away this season.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers had a three-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 5-2 home loss to Toronto as Philly goalie Dan Vladar had his worst outing of the year. Philly took a lead just 1:06 in on a Christian Dvorak goal, his third of the year. Philadelphia has scored two goals in the opening two minutes of a game this season – only Pittsburgh has more with four. Tyson Foerster had the other Flyers goal late in the third, his fourth of the year. Trevor Zegras had one of the assists on that and has tied Hall of Famer Peter Forsberg (eight games in 2005-06) for the longest home point streak by a player from the start of their tenure with the Flyers. With usual No. 2 netminder Samuel Ersson on injured reserve, it should be Aleksei Kolosov on Sunday. The 23-year-old hasn’t played this season and went 5-9-1 wit ha 3.59 GAA and .867 SV last season as a rookie. Philadelphia is 6-2-0 at home.
